I didn’t go to Costa Rica to see street art; like most visitors, my main interests were in its landscapes and its wildlife. The country is famous for being one of the most biodiverse in the world. So maybe it’s not so surprising after all to see that biodiversity celebrated on the streets of Sant Elena, the main tourist hub in the Monteverde region.
So here for this week’s Photographing Public Art challenge is a selection of my favourites, to show a different side of this lovely country.
xx
This pizza restaurant is completely covered in murals celebrating the country’s wildlife, especially the Resplendent Quetzels
This is part of the restaurant’s front wall, with a Quetzel flying over the Costa Rican landscape
And on the side of the restaurant another Quetzel, this one perched on a branch
A different shop, this one selling clothes, with a more abstract design and a positive message
This shop has a colourful Yellow-throated Toucan eating berries
In the small modern shopping centre I found this bird, which I think is a Grey-necked Wood Rail, as well as the pretty hummingbird in my featured photo
In several places in the town the pavements have been painted – I especially liked this example
And some of the telegraph poles are brightly painted too; from a sign near the shopping centre I gathered this was an initiative by the local college
Here’s a small butterfly on a wall (a Blue Morph perhaps?)
This eye-catching building on the outskirts of town has a two storey mural half-hidden in the surrounding greenery
As a change from the murals, one of the restaurants has this huge sculpture in the grounds
And finally I spotted this unusual decoration hanging outside a house on the edge of town, near our hotel
I visited Costa Rica in February 2022

Beautiful and colorful images Sarah! The building murals were amazing.

Thanks so much Anne 🙂 This little town is a hub for tourism in the area and they’ve really made an effort to brighten the shops etc with these murals!

Amazing collection Sarah! My fave is your featured mural.

Thanks Teresa – you won’t be surprised to learn that’s my favourite too!

Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos of Costa Rican street art, Sarah! Another of the many things to love about Costa Rica! Street art, wherever you find it, is like finding hidden treasure. Do you remember the street art in Reykjavik and Sofia — I’m sure you do!!!
Sarah Wilkie
That’s a lovely way to look at it Sylvia, ‘hidden treasure’ 🙂 And yes, of course I remember how wonderful the street art was in both those cities! I have shared some of the best examples here in previous posts: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/gallery-street-art-in-reykjavik/ and https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/gallery-looking-for-street-art-in-sofia/ 😀

Exciting art and you’ve done it justice. I was only in Costa Rica for two days as part of a cargo-ship trip we took to S. America and as the port for collecting the cargo was Limon we only explored in that region, the Veragua rain forest one day and the Cahauita National Park the next, plus a trip down a river. What I saw there impressed me a lot. I’d love to have spent the time there that you did so I’m doubly glad to read of your experiences.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Mari 🙂 That sounds like an interesting trip! We didn’t go to that area, although I suspect the coastal rainforest is similar all along that coast. Needless to say, I’ll be sharing more highlights of our trip over the next few weeks!

Sarah, you have outdone yourself again. I haven’t been to Costa Rica either, and after seeing these wonderful murals and sculpture, it’s somewhere I’d love to visit. The colors and subjects are so bright and cheerful.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Marsha 😊 As I said, you mainly go to Costa Rica for the wildlife, but these murals do give a good idea of how vibrant and special the country is!

I really liked that first hummer, Sarah! Also liked the colorful telegraph poles.
Sarah Wilkie
The hummer was my favourite too 😀

Wonderful collection of public art, Sarah! I’ve only been to Costa Rica twice, and only for day trips from a cruise ship, so I can’t really say I know the country, but I did learn about their avian wildlife on both trips. I will admit that your post reminded me of a special place I visited while there. It will be the focus of my response to this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.
Sarah Wilkie
I’ll look forward to seeing that John 😀

It will be published on Thursday!

Brilliant!
Sarah Wilkie
Glad you liked them Sue 😀
Sue
I did! Missed the street art on my brief visit to that area!
sustainabilitea
These are as vibrant and lovely as the country itself.

Yes, I felt that too 🙂 Thanks Janet!

Beautiful Street art 🙂 🙂

Thanks Brian, glad you liked it 🙂

These works are beautiful.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, very lovely and so reflective of the country 🙂
Christie
I love the street art! It is a wonderful way to brighten a town or a village. We’ve never been to Costa Rica, but it’s definitely on my list🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Really worth a visit, especially if you love wildlife and/or stunning scenery!

I’m not sure I’d agree with your comment about Costa Rica coping well with Covid. It’s on the CDC red list as having very high levels. I caught Covid on our visit a couple of weeks ago.
Sarah Wilkie
Sorry to hear you caught it there – I hope you’re OK now? They did have a surge a few weeks ago due to Omicron, but generally I think their approach has been good and the figures are already coming down again. What I meant by my comment was that they’re implementing effective policies to handle it, e.g. the scheme to certify hotels as having the right systems in place. Also, as it’s a country where you spend much of your time out of doors it feels a better option than one where you’re visiting museums etc.
Emily Clover
Love that tiki sculpture!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Emily – I guess it is somewhat on those lines 🙂

Hunting down street art is a fun activity in any holiday. Great finds here!
Sarah Wilkie
Indeed! Although we enjoyed the wildlife and scenery, this made a nice change for a couple of hours 🙂
Jane's Midlife Journey
Beautiful photos – I thought I was alone in returning from Costa Rica with a collection of telegraph pole photos.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jane 😀 Yes, I have a few of them but picked out the two best (photos not art!) for this post. I deleted your other two comments as they were identical – as you’ve not commented on my blog previously I had to approve your comment before it appeared here which is why you didn’t see it and, I guess, felt you had to try again. If you visit in the future it should work OK!
Jane's Midlife Journey
Sorry, my wifi has been shocking today so I thought that was the issue.
Sarah Wilkie
Understood – but I’m not sure why this comment also needed approval as it should only happen the first time around. Odd!

One of the real joys of travelling CR was the tangible differences between the different areas. Some fabulous artwork here.
Sarah Wilkie
Very true. although we did focus very much on the wildlife areas in our short visit, so this was a nice change for us (especially for Chris who’s less into birds etc. than I am!)
Alison
Arent these lovely like being in an outdoor art gallery, so different from the murals you see around London.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, it was fun exploring the street art here as it really reflects the nature of the country 🙂
Alison
I’ve never been to Costa Rica, it’s on my list now
Sarah Wilkie
I definitely recommend it, and it’s coped well with Covid so is a good option at the moment in particular 🙂
Annie Berger
Thanks so much for highlighting the street art you discovered in Costa Rica. I have become more and more a fan of street art in recent years so took particular pleasure in your post. I can see why you chose and preferred your feature photo but the two telephone poles struck me as I’ve never seen them decorates before by anything but notices of upcoming sales or lost dogs, etc! What a brilliant idea the college had!
Alison
Hi Annie
I think your comments are meant for Sarah! 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Annie, I’m glad you enjoyed this. Yes the telegraph poles are a great idea but I just had to feature that beautiful hummingbird!
Alison, I think the layout of blog comments can be confusing in my theme as well as many others, and it’s quite easy for someone to click in the wrong box to write their own comment. It happens quite a lot, unfortunately, but in general I love the look of this theme so just have to live with that quirk 🙄
