Even a single lamp dispels the deepest darkness
Mahatma Gandhi
If that is true, how much more light must three lamps provide?
I always enjoy photographing beautiful street lamps, so for Thursday Trios this week I had a trawl through my archives to find some in groups of three. While I was about it I discovered some other lighting threesomes too. So here’s small gallery of lamp trios, indoors and out.
A lamppost near the cathedral in Seville (the similar one above is on the Ile de la Cité in Paris)
And one on a hillside in Arpino, Italy
Outside the Central Baths in Sofia, Bulgaria
I think there are three lights on this lamppost in Leipzig, Germany, but it’s hard to be sure for all the ivy that’s climbed up it!
Contrary street lights in Gubbio, Italy
Lamps for sale on the Rue Riad Zitoun el Jdid in Marrakesh
And more lamps for sale in Nizwa Souk, Oman
Chandeliers in Muscat’s Grand Mosque, Oman
Street lights near the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi, designed to look a bit like palm trees
Again in Abu Dhabi, some lights outside the Emirates Palace Hotel, this time with real palm trees!
And to finish, some traditional lanterns in Hoi An, Vietnam

These lights are all beautiful. I’m sorry that I didn’t see them sooner. Great gallery of trio lights.

Thank you – I had fun putting this together 🙂

Will make sure to look at lights and lamps more closely in the future now thanks to this post, Sarah. Wish I had paid more attention to those magical lamps in Nizwa and Muscat, though!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Annie 🙂 I believe the Middle East is especially wonderful for colourful lamps, while Europe does best at historic lampposts!

Wow, such a lovely post about lamps … those in Marrakesh and Oman are quite unique. I like lamps, because they give light to darkness (in a pretty way).
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😊 I agree, those Middle Eastern style lamps are beautiful!
Tanja
I like old gas lamps too
Sarah Wilkie
Ooh yes, me too! There’s a campaign at the moment in London to stop Westminster Council replacing some of the old ones with new electric lighting!

Around the World in three lamps/lights! I am equal parts impressed and jealous! 😉 Mel

Haha, that would have been a good title for this post 😂 Glad you liked it!

Street Lamps are so iconic and the older style one have so much more character than the modern LED ones we have in our neighbourhood. I don’t think I realized that there is a cultural identity to street lamps – the design style varying so greatly between Europe, The Middle East and Asia. I loved the ones in Oman the best, I think.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Amanda. The Oman ones aren’t street lamps, they’re designed to be used in the home or other interiors. We often see similar in Middle Eastern and Turkish restaurants over here in the UK – do you not? But yes, there’s a distinct style to those European lamps that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. I have lots of similar examples from other cities but in branches of four or five rather than three!
Forestwood
Yes I assumed the Oman example was an interior lamp. Although they would look great positioned somewhere in public.

How beautiful are those lamps of Nizwa Souk, Oman
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, gorgeous aren’t they?!

I do like the grace of the three lamp construction. Glasgow bridges tend to have them on their parapets. Here’s one I used for one of Becky’s square challenges.

Oops, pressed reply in wrong place. I’m always doing that! It’s the iPad scroll thing and clumsy thumbs.
Sarah Wilkie
I’ve done it too, no worries 🙂 And your photo of the lights at night is lovely!

It is so beautiful! Love the colour too
Heyjude
Your galleries are brilliant. You’ve a lot of interesting stuff in your archives.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😊 I’ve certainly got a lot of stuff, so I guess some of it is bound to be interesting!
Alison
So clever Sarah, so many lamps from around the World. Your archives are fascinating
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Alison – there are certainly plenty in there from which to choose!
Alison
I think I’ve exhausted my archives!

So if you like taking photographs of street lamps then I suppose it’s a case of….”lights….camera…..ACTION”…?
Sarah Wilkie
Of course I wish I’d though of that 🤣🤣
kzmcb
Oh lovely! They create atmosphere, don’t they?
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, very much so – whether lit or unlit!
