Green is the colour of nature, the colour of spring and summer. It is restful on the eye and calming to the soul. I think it must have inspired more poets and authors than any other colour. And there are almost as many shades of green in our world as there are writers to describe them. Or indeed photographers to try to capture and preserve their beauty!
What is green? The grass is green,
With small flowers between.
Christina Rossetti
Green was the silence, wet was the light, the month of June trembled like a butterfly.
Pablo Neruda
Nature in her green, tranquil woods heals and soothes all afflictions.
John Muir
For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.
Martin Luther
When the green woods laugh with the voice of joy,
And the dimpling stream runs laughing by;
William Blake
For still there are so many things that I have never seen:
In every wood in every spring there is a different green.
J. R. R. Tolkien
No one thinks of winter when the grass is green.
Rudyard Kipling
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Robert Frost
If you were a cloud, and sailed up there,
You’d sail on water as blue as air,
And you’d see me here in the fields and say:
‘Doesn’t the sky look green today?
A. A. Milne
I’m sharing these for Sandy’s Friendly Friday ‘Green’ challenge. I’d rather be away in Sofia and too busy seeing the sights to blog, but thanks to Covid at least I have the consolation of being able to join in some of the weekend’s challenges!

Loved the poets’ quotations you chose to match the photos, Sarah. Great pairings.

Thanks so much Annie 🙂 Sorry again for the delay in replying to comments but I’ve been away for the weekend celebrating my nephew’s wedding!

Great photos of my favorite color, Sarah. Your first picture is magical!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Siobhan 😊 That top photo is of a small stream in the Hoh Rainforest, quite near the Visitor Centre if I remember rightly – we had to cross it to start our walk.

For me, green is definitely synonymous with nature. And I think the UK is the best place to seek for green landscapes … look at that lovely picture in Norfolk (oh, and after our visit to New Zealand – that must be a close second for green countries)! I’m also surprised to see how green Costa Rica is.
Oh, and I hope you are much better now … take good care of yourself.
Sarah Wilkie
The UK is wonderful for green landscapes, yes, but it isn’t alone in that 🙂 Costa Rica is incredibly green – much of it is rainforest or cloud forest. I haven’t been to New Zealand but I have seen enough photos to know that you are right about its greenness too.
Thanks for asking after me. I’m still coughing and still testing positive (as of yesterday) but not feeling too bad. I seem to have got off lightly, thanks probably to my three doses of the vaccine 🙂

I so love green! So many different shades of it! Your photos are so beautiful! My favourite is Gooderstone Water Gardens, Norfolk.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Aletta. Gooderstone is beautiful – one man’s passion project turned into a place that everyone can enjoy!

beautiful collection of green- so calming and peaceful. It is no wonder so many artists and writers are inspired by green.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – yes, it’s not surprising that artists find it such an inspiring colour!

That plant in the first photograph reminds me of an aquatic plant I see in aquariums.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, I know the weed you mean I think. This was in a fast flowing stream in the Hoh Rainforest so is a freshwater plant.

I remember the days when green meant goalkeepers…..!
Sarah Wilkie
Haha yes – and referees always wore black (never shocking pink!!), and players didn’t have their names on their shirts and no advertising either!
Alison
Gorgeous greens Sarah, I love the way you frame your photos. Great quotes to go with them too
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Alison 🙂 I use Photoshop Elements to create the white frames (a skill learned in lockdown!) and the Background plugin to set them off nicely 🙂
Alison
Thanks for the info

I hope you’re feeling better soon. Like you, we’ve picked it up in the last week too and also thanking our lucky stars because we have a trip booked in July. Better to get it over and done with.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks – and I hope you also feel better soon too, in good time for your July trip 🤗
Sandy
Lovely shots Sarah. Cool and refreshing!
What do you mean about Sofia, are you saying that you’re down with Covid? I do hope you’ll feel better soon. Some in my family have had it, but thankfully recovered without complications.
Sarah Wilkie
Hi Sandy – yes, after two and a half years it finally caught up with me! I mentioned it in Thursday’s post but I don’t think many people have picked up on it as yet. It’s not proving a major issue apart from the cancelled trip – just rather a lot of coughing and a few cold-like symptoms. Rotten timing but it could have been worse. My nephew is getting married in two weeks’ time so hopefully I’ll be fine for that 🙂
Sandy
Ah yes, the latest strain is more contagious but less virilent. I wish you a quick recovery! Take care.

I like the quotations you’ve found to support your lovely photos. My favourite is the one in Washington State.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Margaret 🙂 Do you mean the Hoh Rainforest one? That’s a favourite shot of my own. It was such an amazing place to visit!
