All the months are crude experiments, out of which the perfect September is made
Virginia Woolf
There is a theme emerging in these monthly round-ups, a theme of bookends! I’ve already pointed out that while July was bookended by happy gatherings of family and friends, August was similarly bookended with funerals. And now we come to September and we are back to happier bookends: city breaks.
We started the month with a long weekend in Paris, to celebrate our wedding anniversary. And we ended it with a few days in Sofia, the trip that had to be postponed when I caught Covid in June. I’ve already shared a lot of images from Paris and will be doing similarly with Sofia. So I’ve just thrown a few of each into the mix for my slide show and instead concentrated more on events and activities closer to home.
Happily we bask in this warm September sun, which illuminates all creatures…
Henry David Thoreau
You may just have noticed one significant event in the life of our whole country last month, the death of Queen Elizabeth II. I’ve written about that already, when I went into the centre of London to soak up a bit of the atmosphere as people laid flowers in Green Park and started to gather on the Mall for her funeral.
The remainder of my images come from more everyday activities but fun nevertheless. There was a visit to the BBC’s New Broadcasting House to hear a talk by the political journalist Michael Cockerell, who during his career has interviewed twelve different Prime Ministers. There were our usual walks in our local park, and also visits to Kensington Gardens and to Soho. Not included in the slide show are trips to the cinema (Moonage Daydream), lunch with my sister and her husband in Reading, and dinner with Virtual Tourist friends in London.
Technical notes
Some of the local shots were taken with my new Panasonic Lumix FZ330, which I’m still getting to know. But for the city breaks and London outings I relied on the convenience of my compact point and shoot Lumix, which is easy to slip into a handbag. And handful of the photos were taken with my phone; as someone once said, the best camera is the one you have with you. On one occasion this month that proved to be my husband’s camera! I wasn’t carrying mine and I knew my phone wouldn’t be up to capturing the heron, so he kindly loaned me the use of his (also a compact point and shoot Lumix).Â
Again as usual, I’ve enjoyed playing around with some of these shots, using mostly Nik Color Efex. And as always I am linking to Ju-Lyn’s Changing Seasons challenge. Brian I know is having connectivity issues so I’m not (yet) linking to him.
I’ll finish with advance warning that we’re going to be away at the end of October, so I won’t be posting then. Instead I’ll do a two-month round-up at the end of November.

It certainly looks like it was a great September (despite the Queen’s death). So much colour – your flowers are bright and beautiful and the photo of the cathedral in Sofia is also a favourite.

Yes, I have to admit that we had a great September (unlike the Royal family) – it’s wonderful to be travelling so much again!

An end-of-an-era kind of month huh. We know by now that we share opinions on Paris, but I’m interested in learning about Sofia as I’ve never been. I can see you’ve posted once already so I’ll be catching up shortly.

I really like Sofia. It’s not much like Paris although there are a few grand boulevards. It still bears the legacy of a fair amount of neglect of its past during the communist era but it’s a city on the up and there’s lots to admire. I like how there are so many layers of history in a very compact area. You can stand in one spot and see Roman ruins, a medieval church, a mosque and communist-era Stalinist blocks without moving! The food is good, and the beer cheap 🙂

Lots of plusses then!

I always enjoy looking through your collections, Sarah. For me, this September group suggests that this is a time of reflection, which in turn reflects the changing season and the move towards the darker months. Lovely. 🙂

Thank you Alli 🙂 I think you’re right about September – we look back at the summer but also forwards to the winter to come. I’m always torn at this season. I love the beauty of autumn and in some ways welcome the cosiness of winter, plus the social aspects of Christmas. But I hate cold weather!

These are wonderful shots whatever camera you use!
And you’re going away again…lucky you! Have a great time Sarah!

Yes, we’re really making up for lost time now! And have plans for several trips next year, although not all firmed up 🙂

The stained glass really jumps out at me. Fabulous!

There was some gorgeous stained glass in that cathedral and unusually secular in design!

How wonderful to have city breaks as bookends!!! Looking forward to hearing about Sofia…..
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, that made for a pretty good month 😀

Lovely September collection. My top 2 – taking off from Heathrow, and the staircase in Sophia…
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Rose 🙂 I was surprised that Heathrow shot came out as well as it did. I wanted the focus on the rain drops but I hope you spotted the rainbow nevertheless?
