Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.
Don McCullin
I suspect I may have used that quote before but it’s so appropriate to this challenge that I could resist repeating it. To focus on a single word and bring it to life in an image; it sounds simple, but …
The photos I’ve chosen for this month’s Pick a Word challenge come from Botswana, China, Oman, Guatemala and Peru. Whatever else they make you feel, you could well be dizzy travelling so far so quickly! But hopefully you’ll also feel a little playful, and perhaps even fortified.
As always I haven’t stuck only to Paula’s five words, as I like to tell you a little bit about each photo. However I do try to be more succinct for this challenge than for most of my posts!
DISTINCTIVE
Zebra, Chobe National Park, Botswana
The unmistakeable stripes of a zebra, instantly recognisable even when so close that no body features are visible.
FLOATING
Duck boat in Beijing’s Bei Hai Park
These fun boats can be rented by the hour and are popular with local families.
FORTIFIED
Portuguese watchtower, Quriyat, Oman
These watchtowers dot the Omani landscape, some in ruins but many restored by the government to act as landmarks and appeal to tourists. Back in 1508 Quriyat was one of the first towns in Oman to come under attack from the Portuguese fleet as that country set about colonising the coastal area.
PLAYFUL
In Panajachel, Guatemala
I spotted these two small boys playing with their puppy on the streets of Panajachel, on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. They were very happy to pose and show off their pet.
SADDLE
Rano Raraku, Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
As we explored the ‘moai quarry’ of Rano Raraku on Rapa Nui I noticed this ranger keeping an eye on everyone. It was the only place on the island where I was aware of any security protecting the moai.

Wow, the zebra’s stripes up close are amazing! However, I think the (colour) photo in Oman is my favourite … and the puppy stole my heart 🙂.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much – yes, that puppy is really cute!

Great work Sarah, as always. I had to smile at the duck boats, they are to be found in most (if not all) of Beijing’s parks. I think I have a shot or two of them from Chaoyang Park. Your cover photo is my favourite, absolutely dripping with atmosphere. For some reason (my brain works in strange ways) it made me think of the movie ‘Babel’. Time for a rewatch methinks.

Thanks Leighton 😀 Yes, the duck boats are fun for sure! I’d never thought to edit that watchtower photo in B&W until this challenge but now I’ve done it I prefer it to the colour original. Glad you like it too!

Indeed. And I’m not a morning person… 😉

I don’t know if I feel fortified now, but I am in a playfull mood after seeing that puppy and kids :). Stunning photos, Sarah, and that quote is so true. Thank you.

Glad you enjoyed this and caught the playful vibe Paula 😀

You really find the best pictures to depict a word. All of these are perfect representations of what the word conveys. I really love the man and his horse picture- it is my favorite of this group 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much 😀 I was stuck for a saddle image for a while until I remembered that shot!

Funny how the word “playful” immediately makes us think of a puppy! Like the close up zebra shot which as you say is unmistakable.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Phil, and yes, this was the first photo I thought of for ‘playful’

Always such great photos, and these are so perfectly matched to the words, Sarah. I love the Rapa Nui Ranger – he looks intent.

Thanks so much Kellye ☺️

Oh, fabulous, Sarah, especially the zebra. Me? I’m still trying ti get my Major General to embark on further adventures, but he seems a bit marooned 😉
Sarah Wilkie
Oh dear, marooned doesn’t sound good 🙁
