A cloud comes over the sunlit arch, a wind comes off a frozen peak, and you’re two months back in the middle of March.
Robert Frost
Sitting on the plane that brought us home from Mexico we were congratulating ourselves on our timing. Tomorrow would be the first of March, and spring, we thought, just around the corner. We should have known better! Although in the fairly recent past (most notably the lockdown spring of 2020) we’ve had some wonderful March weather, this time last year I was writing that, ‘With a slow start to the spring this year it’s felt at times as if March was coming in more like a polar bear than a lion!’ And so it was again this year.
We have had a lot of rain this month and a lot of grey skies even when not raining, even if at times temperatures have been significantly above the average. But where’s the fun in being warm if it’s pouring with rain?! A case in point: one lunch time we spotted a rare break in the clouds and blue skies overhead. We decided that as soon as we’d finished eating we would go out to photograph the local magnolia trees, so popular in Ealing gardens. They look so much better with blue sky as a backdrop! But by the time we were ready to go out, maybe thirty minutes later, skies were grey again. We did go out, and we did photograph magnolias, but you won’t find any sky in my photos below!
It’s been a stay-at-home month but that doesn’t mean a particularly quiet one. There have been the usual cinema visits (‘Bob Marley: One Love’, ‘The Taste of Things’, and ‘Monster’ – all good in different ways but I especially liked the last of them). Also meals out with friends or just the two of us, an evening out with friends visiting London from Germany, and an outing to the Photographers’ Gallery. We stayed at home over Easter too, with family visiting for the day on Easter Sunday.
But we don’t stay home for long, so April will bring a long weekend in Sardinia where we hope to finally find some spring sunshine!
Technical notes
Most of these shots were taken with my compact Panasonic Lumix or with my phone, but for the one of the parakeet I used my Panasonic bridge camera. Most have been at least a little edited with Photoshop Elements and some more heavily edited with Nik Color Efex.
As always I am linking my selection to Ju-Lyn’s and Brian’s Changing Seasons challenge. Use the arrows to navigate the slideshow if you want to see all the images.

I wonder if you counted the days before you began your long weekend away in Sardinia after all that rain, Sarah! Thanks for finding beauty in everyday life even when it’s dreary.
Sarah Wilkie
We’re off to Sardinia next Wednesday and if not exactly counting the days I’m certainly looking forward to some sun!

Beautiful gallery, Sarah! I think I like the picture of the parakeet best.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you again Siobhan 🙂 The parakeets are great fun to have around, although not everyone agrees as it seems they may be driving some native birds away.

I love the assortment of flowers-so bright, happy, and very spring
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed them 🙂

Another superb collection Sarah. You certainly made the best of the March weather conditions. I loved the close ups of wildlife, and the arrival of bees is always a good indicator that spring has sprung. And that single magnolia is magnificent! 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Aw, thank you Alli 😊 We’re starting to see more bees now and we’ve had a few pleasant days. But I’m guessing Storm Kathleen will have hot your area quite fiercely?
Alli Templeton
Yes, it has rather. Very strong winds (mph in the upper 40s), and a little rain, but otherwise, strangely dry with some sunshine and mild. Very odd weather we’re having these days. It’s climate change in real time.

Haha you’re right on both accounts. I get weekly emails from people I follow and also I’ve been remiss about commenting on blogs. So i look at a few at a time 😀
Alison
Beautiful Sarah, the soft focus magnolia is lovely. Nice that you’ve had a busy month and haven’t let the weather get you down
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you again Alison – you’ve been busy catching up with my posts this morning, I see 🙂 You’ll know that if we wait for good weather over here we’d only do a fraction of the things we want to!

Sometimes gray skies add a lovely thoughtful layer to photos, and it’s a reminder that days can be beautiful even if they’re not sunny. I particularly like the Camelia photo.
Sarah Wilkie
That’s very true Rose, although I think most of us in the UK will say we’ve had enough of them for the time being and would welcome a prolonged sunnier period!
Rose
I can relate Sarah, we’ve had cloudy weather for far too long. After the rain of today and tomorrow, the coming week is supposed to be sunny here. I can hardly wait.☀️😎🌞
Amy
Such a beautiful slide show, Sarah! Lovely spring flowers, especially the pink magnolia.
I really enjoyed the Taste of Things!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy 🙂 And I’m glad you enjoyed that film too!

Even with grey skies you got some lovely photos. Here we had a wetter than expected summer, but still with high temperatures and so far autumn is wetter than normal too. And now the long range forecast is that we might get another wet spring and summer at the end of the year. But as Mr ET said this morning it’s better to have rain than drought and once it does stop raining we might get any for months or even years. So we’ll take what comes our way.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂 I’m sure rain is better than drought, but I think we’ve already had enough this year to see us through a dryish summer, should we get one! The trend here is certainly for milder but wetter winters and hotter summers.

The magnolia shots and the snail caught my attention today out of all the attractive choices. Sounds like a good month, whether at home or not.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Janet, it was 🙂

You literally can’t beat a good day in London. I’m a big fan of your night images, Sarah. Magnolia images are beautiful.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Suzanne, I’m happy you like my home city – and my magnolia shots 😀
Pat
Wonderful photos of London – my favorite is the magnolia framed by the branch. I think it would be beautiful matted and framed. Your photos have triggered my very fond memories of visiting London several times.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Pat, I’m so glad you like my magnolia 😀 And I’m happy to have reminded you of visits to London!

Love those magnolias, Sarah
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂

I’m still at the stage of smiling at grey skies, Sarah, but that’s because I have compensation in the form of son, not sun. I couldn’t resist a few magnolia shots myself when I was out this morning but you’re not wrong- they’ll need cropping!
Sarah Wilkie
I’m sure being with family cancels out any greyness in the sky, especially when you don’t get to see them that often (and perhaps also because you DO get to see blue skies quite a lot!)
restlessjo
It did have something to do with our move to the Algarve, that’s for sure 🌞❤️
Teresa
What awesome florals you have for the month. Love them all. Such serenity.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Teresa, I’m happy you liked them 😊

I’m waiting for the weather to change here also. We had a few sunny days, but it’s supposed to get cloudy again today and rain tonight. You did well on an overcast day. Loved the flowers and the night shots, the Film Works building and the hairy bumble bee!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Anne, it always nice to hear which ones are favourites 🙂 The Filmworks one was serendipity of a kind, as we were stuck standing outside on a very chilly day because a fire alarm had gone off in the cinema just as we were arriving to see a film!
margaret21
A lovely quiet post for a month that’s largely seen you staying put. I love the way your magnolia shots punctuate your images. And that night shot of London. A lovely celebration of a rather unlovely March.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Margaret 🙂 Yes, a quiet month but a pleasant one despite the weather.

That awful weather was dragging us down before we got back out here in Brazil. England seems to be getting greyer and more miserable year on year! Lovely floral shots though, even without the sky!
Sarah Wilkie
Anonymous again but Brazil is a giveaway – thank you Phil 🙂
bushboy
Love the florals and macros Sarah. I love night photos as I am crap at them
Thanks for joining in The Changing Seasons 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Brian 🙂 I’m not sure you’re right about your own night photos – your ones of the moon this month were great!
