Gallery: an August selection (2024)

One evening in August you have an errand outdoors, and all of a sudden it’s pitch-black. It is still summer, but the summer is no longer alive.

There’s a feeling of autumn in the air as we reach the end of August and head into September. And that’s even though recently we’ve had some of the loveliest days of our rather patchy summer. Some leaves are beginning to turn, or even drop, and there are berries on many of the street trees in Ealing. And although Jansson was talking about Scandinavia, it’s not so very different here in southern England, as already I’m noticing myself turning on the lights much earlier than at the height of summer.

However, we’ve had plenty of sunny days to enjoy this month. As well as various outings in London, for walks, meals or to see an exhibition, we also spent a week in Newcastle as we like to do most Augusts. It was a chance to catch up with family and friends there. And we took advantage of the good weather to take a trip up to Warkworth in Northumberland,and another to Gibside, both already described in posts here.

On our way home, again as usual, we stopped off in Grinton in the Yorkshire Dales to meet-up with the daughters of the family with whom my father-in-law was evacuated. We spent that night in Masham before driving home the next day.

Technical notes

All of this month’s photos were taken with either my phone or Panasonic Lumix compact. The latter has developed an annoying fault, with an internal blemish leaving an apparent smear across all my shots. It’s not visible in a busy scene but when it coincides with sky or a plain surface I have to carefully edit it out. Unfortunately the Lumix compact isn’t currently available in any model and I’m resisting buying anything else as I really like the half-decent viewfinder that only Panasonic seem minded to include in their spec. I’m holding out in the hope that they reintroduce a compact camera to their range soon!
