She wants to be flowers, but you make her owls. You must not complain, then, if she goes hunting.
Alan Garner, The Owl Service*
Owls are hunters, birds of prey. And like all birds of prey they pursue other animals for food, something that not everyone is comfortable with. But they are also very beautiful, with delicate markings on their feathers – spots and stripes that frame their faces, adorn their wings and bodies. They are among my favourite birds.
A few years ago we visited one of several UK Birds of Prey centres. These are dotted around the country; the one we went to was in Bedfordshire north of London. There we had the opportunity to meet some of their owls, as well as other birds. We also learned to fly several of the birds of prey, including a fabulous Eagle Owl. She was majestic – and very heavy!
Here is a selection of the owl photos I took that day, shared for this week’s Bird Weekly theme of birds with stripes, spots or freckles.
* The Owl Service is a teenage fantasy novel set in Wales, based around the legend of Blodeuwedd, a woman created from flowers by Math, the king of Gwynedd. She is turned into an owl as punishment for inducing her lover to kill her husband. The story has little to do with actual owls (the owls in question are a design on a dinner service, hence the title) but I love the book and this quotation.

Great shots of these magnificent birds, Sarah. I got to fly a barn owl and eagle owl in Ireland last year. The trainer supported each participant’s wrist when we held the eagle owl. Big bird!

Thank you Siobhan 🙂 I seem to remember that we were helped to hold the weight of the eagle owl too – I certainly remember how heavy he was as he landed!!

Beautiful photos Sarah, we haven’t held one but my Mum did and she was amazed at how deep the feathers were. I think that the Barn Owl has to be my favourite, such a pretty bird. Michaela

Thank you 😊 Yes, I’ve been lucky enough to hold an owl on several occasions and the feathers are really deep. Beneath them they are much smaller birds than you would imagine!

Gorgeous close-ups! You can see why humans attribute wisdom to owls.

Yes, when you get this close they do look as if they are thinking rather deeply, don’t they? Apart from the Eagle Owl in my featured photo, who’s spoiling for a fight!

Gorgeous owls, Sarah! A little bird told me that you’re hosting Lisa’s Bird Weekly this week! Looking forward to it. In the meantime, I need to see more birds in my own area!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Terri 🙂 Yes, Lisa asked me to help out next week, and I agreed – slightly nervously, I might add, as it will be my first time hosting a challenge!

You will do great! Lot’s of commenting on your part, but I’m sure you will enjoy it!

Wozzer! Beautiful gallery of owls. I love owls too and still have a few on my bucket list here in the states that I haven’t seen. The close up that you got here is amazing! I chuckled at the Cross eyed Grey Owl. I’d love to see all these birds. The only one that I have seen in your bunch is the Snowy Owl and that was a rare sighting. Here is the post from back then. https://oureyesopen.blog/2020/08/21/bird-weekly-photo-challenge-rare-birds/

Thank you so much Lisa – I’m happy you liked my owls 🙂 It was great to be able to get this close to them. The only one of these I’ve seen in the wild in the Barn Owl, and he was in flight so impossible to photograph!

Well, sometimes you just have to go with the flow. I really want to see the Great Grey Owl in the wild. That would be a dream come true. The chance of seeing the Snowy Owl was like winning the lottery. 🙂

I can just imagine how excited you were!

Funny thing was…I was down in Tampa and Frank stayed in Jacksonville. My BFF’s hubby was reading about the Snowy Owl in the newspaper and said something to me about it. It was on our favorite beach where Frank & I fell in love. I called Frank and he called the park and sure enough it was there. He went out there that day. When I got home the next day, we went out there. Pretty amazing how lucky that was to get the info when I was out of town. 🙂

Such beautiful photo’s Sarah! Difficult to choose a favourite, but like the Barn owl (and had to laugh at the cross-eye Grey owl 😉).

Thank you so much 🙂 I have a soft spot for Barn Owls but my own favourites here are the close-up of the Grey Owl and the last one of the Eagle Owl 🙂
