Yes, London can be different things to different people, and different parts of London can be different to each other. Contrast Mayfair with Camden Market, or Soho with the South Bank. As a Londoner I have lots of favourite areas of course, and love to visit all of them. But I always enjoy a walk in Londonβs Spitalfields and Brick Lane areas, and even better when I can introduce a friend to this lively area.

TromsΓΈ is in many ways a surprising city, and full of extremes. Located well inside the Arctic Circle it experiences both Midnight Sun (in summer) and Polar Night (in winter). It can boast the world's northernmost university, its northernmost botanical garden, northernmost cathedral β and northernmost brewery!

Opinion is divided on street art / graffiti. Some consider it vandalism, others (including me) enjoy the way it brightens a city. Great street art can be beautiful; it can make you think; it can transform a district. So of course I was on the lookout for street art in Tirana, as I am everywhere I go.

Historically, Getsemani is the area of Cartagena where African slaves lived during colonial times. The Spanish had imported them (after theyβd killed off most of the native population) to build their fortifications: the city walls and the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. They were housed here, outside the city walls, away from the grand homes of the soldiers and merchants who controlled it.

You canβt really miss the unique style of Colombiaβs most famous artist. Whether on canvas or in sculpture, his figures are exaggeratedly rotund. The innate humour of these people, and animals, is often offset by sharp political commentary or by pensive contemplation of his own life and family. Indeed the theme of family is central to much of his work.

How do you find peace in a city rife with crime and violence? During the 1980s and most of the 1990s MedellΓn had the reputation of being one of the most violent cities in the world.

If I had to choose a single word to associate with Colombia, it would be βcolourβ. Nowhere else, I believe, have I seen so many brightly painted houses as in some of its villages. And as for street art, I firmly believe the Colombians are obsessed!

Many of the houses in GuatapΓ© are decorated with friezes along the lower portion, known as zΓ³calos.

Sofia may have moved its many communist era monuments to a dedicated museum, but that doesnβt mean that the city is short of interesting public art pieces. And there is quite a variety, from the purely artistic to the historically significant.

Itβs no secret that I am a big fan of street art. I donβt mean scrawled graffiti, or even more precisely worked βtagsβ. I mean art. Like many cities today, Sofia offers a dedicated street art tour; we saw signs advertising it in several places. But we chose not to take the tour, instead preferring to seek out street art at our own pace.
