January brings the snow, makes our feet and fingers glow
Sara Coleridge
Thankfully this January didn’t bring snow to London, but it was certainly more than cold enough to make any feet and fingers glow! Personally I can’t wait for the warmer days of spring, although we’re not hanging around here for that but are headed elsewhere in a hunt for heat!
Meanwhile, here’s a selection of favourite shots taken over the past month. These images sum up my January 2023. We started the year in Newcastle, where we spent a week over the New Year weekend. Until Covid we’d done this every year; it was good to be back. We caught up with family and friends and also made time for walks on the beach at Druridge Bay, in Tynemouth (where my feature photo was taken) and along the Tyne.
Back home we enjoyed some cinema visits, a pub lunch to celebrate my brother-in-law’s 70th birthday, and a great exhibition in our local gallery. I had a lovely belated Christmas get-together with my two oldest friends (December’s snow had scuppered our original plans). And I also had the great pleasure of meeting fellow blogger Alison for a walk and lunch in the City of London; my first blogger meet-up but hopefully not my last!
A few of these photos have appeared in other posts during January but are such favourites that I couldn’t help but repeat them here.
Technical notes
All these shots were taken with my phone or with my compact point and shoot Lumix. Unusually for this time of year I have only two black and white edits, created with Silver Efex Pro. The rest were edited in Photoshop Elements and some of them also quite significantly with Color Efex Pro.
As always I am linking my selection to Ju-Lyn’s and Brian’s Changing Seasons challenge.
As I mentioned above, I am off soon in search of warmer weather, among many other things. I apologise in advance if I’m slower than usual to acknowledge any comments. As always they will be very much appreciated and replied to as soon as I am able to!

I love your Matt Dixon captures, particularly the one with the teddy bear. So very endearing.

Thank you 😊 That exhibition was great – I was amazed how much character he got into his robots 😀

Although it didn’t snow in London, I can tell it was really cold when I look at your Druridge Bay photos and frosted branches in Ealing. But I love that you end your photos with bright yellow daffodils – a promise of warmer days on its way 🌟.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, we werehaving a very cold spell when I took that photo of the frosted branches. Druridge is in the North East of the country and it’s usually colder there than in London in the south, so that beach photo was taken in typical January weather.

Hi Sarah, I only got to see pictures of the bridge when I clicked on the link. Beautiful, atmospheric photographs as always.
I can’t seem to find the gallery of photos. Is there some link I need to click on?
Wow! Meeting a fellow blogger sounds fun. Hopefully, one of your travels in search of the sun brings you to Dhaka :).
So, where are you’ll migrating this time?🙂 Sounds exciting.
Sarah Wilkie
You should be able to see a slideshow of photos near the bottom of this post. It should play automatically but if not you can click to scroll through. But none is of a bridge so I’m puzzled by that comment!
We’re currently in Colombia for a few weeks – not exactly a migration but a brief escape from the London winter at least!

Hi Sarah, I meant Druridge bay, not bridge. Typo error. The slide show did not work for me, but, I did scroll through the pictures now. The silhouette of the man and the dog on the beach and the plant covered in ice stood out. Pictures of flowers are always a delight to see.
Wow! Columbia sounds exciting. Looking forward to seeing your pictures and hearing your adventures there. Happy holidays🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Ah Druridge – that makes sense! So glad you found and liked the photos for THIS post 😀 Yes, Colombia 🇨🇴 We’re having a great time so far and I’ll be sharing plenty of posts about it no doubt!

Wonderful photos from January, Sarah. I love the photos from the “A Sense of Wonder” exhibition, the little robot is enchanting. Have a fun and sunny trip! We came to Greece in search of warmer weather, but sadly our arrival seems to have marked the end of the good weather here.

Thanks Leighton. Yes, I was surprised how cute a robot can be! There were quite a few, I just chose a couple of favourites to include here. I hope the weather improves for you soon ☀️

Beautiful pictures from the last month. Those sense of wonder pictures are really delightful and playful 🙂

That was a great little exhibition!
Wind Kisses
A beautiful gallery. Loved the photos from the Sense of Wonder Exhibit. Cute. Have a fun trip.

Yes, those little robots were surprisingly cute!

Hi Sarah, Enjoyed your January collection very much. Your architectural shots caught my eye- including the person at the Tate made the image sing. Hope you find some warmth! 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jane 😊 It was seeing that guy sitting on the floor there that made me reach for my camera!
Heyjude
It looks somewhat chilly on that beach! A great shot of the kestrel and I love your Tate Modern image. Have a wonderful warm trip away Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
It was chilly, but not too bad for early January on the north east coast! Still, being somewhere warmer for a bit will be very welcome 🙂

I went through the photos, had another look, and again but can’t pick a favourite Sarah. The winter beach scenes, the urban, the flowers, the hovering Kite, the art…..just fabulous. Thanks for joining in The Changing Seasons:) 🙂

They’re all good of course, but my favourite? King’s Cross
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Malcolm – that roof is quite stunning, isn’t it?!
Easymalc
Even more so the way you’ve captured it Sarah.

These are wonderful January shots, Sarah. I especially love the first one, Druridge Bay. I am looking forward to seeing where you’re going to warm up!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Kellye 🙂 We’re off to Colombia tomorrow!

Oh, how fun! I will look forward to seeing your photos and posts. Safe travels.

Wonderful shots, perhaps especially that evening sky. Have a wonderful trip, and worry about commenting when you come back. We can all wait!
Anne Sandler
Great collection of images Sarah! I love the beach scenes and the roof of the Kings Crossing Station.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anne 🙂 I use Kings Cross station a lot and that roof never fails to impress me, even when it isn’t lit. The station used to be rather a dump but since modernisation it’s been one of London’s nicest 🙂
Monkey's Tale
I’m not sure if it’s just me but I can’t read any of the title, it looks like two rows of text on top of each other. Are those daffodils growing outside already?? Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Maggie. The title looks OK from my end but I’ll check it out. No, the daffodils are ones I bought to put in a vase in the house – I hoped my caption made that clear but I guess it could read as if I’d picked them! We have daffodil leaves showing but it will be weeks before we see any flowers on them!
Monkey's Tale
It will be April or May before we see them here!!
