Our planet’s wildlife, the dazzling array of species that inhabit the earth alongside us, are not merely companions in our journey through time; they are the bedrock of the ecosystems that sustain life as we know it.
Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary General, UNCTAD (the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development)
Every year on 3rd March World Wildlife Day celebrates the unique roles and contributions of wildlife to people and the planet. Initiated by the United Nations in 2013, the day invites all of us to remember how much we rely on the earth’s natural resources and have a responsibility to protect them.
To mark it, here is a selection of images recalling some of my favourite wildlife encounters in various places around the world, and a few closer to home. Many have been shared before, and some will no doubt reappear in the future, but it seemed appropriate to bring them all together today.

I never get tired of seeing wildlife in their natural habitat. You have so many beautiful pictures of animals here that, for the first time, I’m not going to dare to pick a favourite 🙂.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – picking favourites is fun but never obligatory 😀

There is always, for me, an element of nostalgia, when I see photos (or movies) of wildlife… I still remember the animals in East Africa so vividly. Huges herds of elephants. (Will share those in a while). Now human encroachment is driving the animals’ habitat down. Shrinking slowly. I don’t know how long they will last.
Thank you
Sarah Wilkie
I’ll look forward to seeing those herds, I love elephants! I understand what you’re saying about human encroachment but I do feel we’re beginning to understand the impact of that and at least try to mitigate it. I hope so.

It’s not really happening. At least not in Africa that I know of. Demography there is so high, that crops are extending and extending. Can’t be curbed. If a new village is set close to… let’s say Tsavo, and the elephants go out of the reserve and loot the maize crops… it becomes a conflict. And in the end the animals always lose.

Sad to hear

I liked the black and white lemur from behind, Sarah. The mouse on the teasel was precious. I bet that would look good in black and white as well. Also liked the zebra picture.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Siobhan 🙂 That lemur was really performing for us, it seemed!

Fantastic. A veritable photographic zoology!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Phil 😀 A photographic zoo perhaps, but I’m not sure I’m scientific enough for zoology!

I can feel the warmth emanating from all these wild creatures – seeing them together is a good thing. Thanks for honoring the day that should really be every day. 😉
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much 😊 Yes, we really shouldn’t need a special day to be reminded about the importance of the world’s wildlife.
Christie
Such a fabulous collection to celebrate the World Wildlife Day🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, so glad you liked them 😊

Beautiful collection of animals! I love how close up the pictures are 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – the wonders of a decent zoom lens!

It goes without saying that all your shots are wonderful. Oddly though, the two I’m most in awe of are British shots: the field mouse – fantastic! And the badger. I’m probably luckier than many when it comes to badger spotting, but as it’s usually at night in poor conditions I haven’t got so much as a fuzzy snapshot.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 😊 Those British shots are ‘cheats’ in some way, in that they were taken at the wildlife centre we visited last year. I could never achieve anything like that in the wild, I’m sure!

Even so …
Easymalc
Fantastic. No other word for it Sarah.

Thanks so much Malcolm 😊

Precious, all cuddled up. Wonderful image, Sarah! Happy WWD, indeed!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jane (and thank you for inspiring me to also celebrate the day). I’m glad you like those lemurs, but is that the only image you can see? There should be a whole gallery visible 🙂
Jane Lurie
I only saw one image… 🧐
Sarah Wilkie
Are you looking in Reader? Most people seem to be able to see the gallery as they’ve commented on some of the photos in it.
Jane Lurie
Now I see! Fantastic wildlife collection, Sarah. Brava!👏🏻
Sarah Wilkie
Oh that’s great, I’m pleased you found it (and liked it)!

Excellent post, Sarah, and very appropriate timing
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Sue 🙂 Technically a day late but I’m blaming jet-lag and the mountain of Mexico images awaiting sorting and editing!

An excellent way to mark World Wildlife Day, Sarah. You’re a superb wildlife photographer. I want to hug each and every one of your subjects and make the planet a better place for them. They don’t deserve to suffer for man’s follies. As my husband has just said – after admiring your photos as well – ‘every day should be World Wildlife Day’, and I couldn’t agree more. The ‘dazzling array of species that inhabit the earth alongside us’ that are, indeed, ‘the bedrock of the ecosystems that sustain life as we know it’ should be permanently at the forefront of our minds. For our sake as well as theirs.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alli 😊 (that’s me blushing!) Stuart is right, we shouldn’t wait for a specific day to start considering the needs of wildlife. But it’s a much-needed and hopefully helpful nudge when such days come along.
Anne Sandler
Thank you Sarah!
Sarah Wilkie
Glad you liked these Anne 🙂
