One evening in August you have an errand outdoors, and all of a sudden it’s pitch-black. It is still summer, but the summer is no longer alive.
Tove Jansson, The Summer Book
Thereβs a feeling of autumn in the air as we reach the end of August and head into September. And that’s even though recently weβve had some of the loveliest days of our rather patchy summer. Some leaves are beginning to turn, or even drop, and there are berries on many of the street trees in Ealing. And although Jansson was talking about Scandinavia, itβs not so very different here in southern England, as already Iβm noticing myself turning on the lights much earlier than at the height of summer.
However, weβve had plenty of sunny days to enjoy this month. As well as various outings in London, for walks, meals or to see an exhibition, we also spent a week in Newcastle as we like to do most Augusts. It was a chance to catch up with family and friends there. And we took advantage of the good weather to take a trip up to Warkworth in Northumberland, and another to Gibside, both already described in posts here.
On our way home, again as usual, we stopped off in Grinton in the Yorkshire Dales to meet-up with the daughters of the family with whom my father-in-law was evacuated. We spent that night in Masham before driving home the next day.
Technical notes
All of this monthβs photos were taken with either my phone or Panasonic Lumix compact. The latter has developed an annoying fault, with an internal blemish leaving an apparent smear across all my shots. Itβs not visible in a busy scene but when it coincides with sky or a plain surface I have to carefully edit it out. Unfortunately the Lumix compact isnβt currently available in any model and Iβm resisting buying anything else as I really like the half-decent viewfinder that only Panasonic seem minded to include in their spec. Iβm holding out in the hope that they reintroduce a compact camera to their range soon!
As always I am linking my selection to Ju-Lynβs and Brianβs Changing Seasons challenge. Use the arrows to navigate the slideshow if you want to see all the images.

These are lovely. A shame about the camera, but glad you’ve found a workaround.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks again Ruth π The camera is only annoying on shots with very plain areas, like skies and white buildings!

SO many escapes from London last month, Sarah, and therefore so any opportunities for more great photos even with the camera issues you had. Love the misty agapanthus from your garden, the smiling tree, the Yorkshire doorknocker and the Newcastle saying about coming up for sir. I wonder if that written with the pandemic in mind.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie π I’m not sure about that Newcastle poem being related to the pandemic as it and several others have sprung up around the city just in the last year or so.

a bright and happy collection of color, flowers, thoughts, and vibes. I really love the smiley face tree branch- that just made my day π
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Meg – it made my day too when I spotted it π

Your header photo makes me look forward to our summer season. Your Agapanthus is lovely and I like the softness of the beach at Warkworth.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you again. I hope you have a lovely summer βοΈ

Great collection of August photos. I donβt get homesick when weβre travelling. Well not unless someone mentions the words βpub gardenβ π
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Phil π So you don’t want to hear about the lovely garden at our local, just down the road from here?!

Beautiful gallery – the teddy bear was a fun find!!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nora π The teddy bear is quite new I think, or at least I didn’t notice him the last time I was in that area!

Oh good luck with the camera. I wonβt share my similar story, lest you despair. I completely agree with your quote and it always drops my spirit, but here we are entering the warmer months, so chin up.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you π Ah yes, while we mourn the end of summer yours if fast approaching, and in a few months we will switch, again!

We’re finally in the same time zone, Sarah! It is rather fun knowing that we are breathing some of the same air – I have run through Hyde & Kensington Parks a number of times in the last couple of weeks, but have never spotted the Yayoi sculpture. I shall endeavour to work harder to find it.
The flowers in your garden are so beautiful.
Sarah Wilkie
I know – I’ve thought about you being here and even considered suggesting meeting up but I know you’re busy with family and we’re about to go away (tomorrow) so the timing hasn’t felt right. The sculpture is huge – you can’t miss it if in the right vicinity! It’s towards the southern side of the park, a little way in from the Albert Memorial and not far from the Serpentine Gallery South.
Ju-Lyn
Thank you for thinking of me and of meeting up – under normal circumstances, I would jump at the opportunity (when you were not whisking away on another adventure). But you are right, our energies are mostly focused elsewhere for now).
Thank you for the directions … I have mostly run on the outskirts of the parks … I will venture in to look for it.
Sarah Wilkie
Do, and let me know what you think!
Ju-Lyn
Found it! It is so much larger than Iβd expected! It was good fun searching for and finding it! Thank you.
Sarah Wilkie
Oh great! Yes, it is pretty big π

A good month despite the unpredictable weather, though you have had more sunnier days than us. Love the Brick Lane girl and the Chinatown image. Cities do provide a wealth of interesting photos.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jude π Yes, we’ve done better than you have for weather this summer it seems, and August was one of our nicer months!
margaret21
It looks as though you had a really fun month. Well, Up North, so of course!
Sarah Wilkie
But of course π But in London too, equally fun (she said, diplomatically!)

Yes, it’s fun isn’t it?! I was going to include it in my Gibside walk post the other day but decided to save it for this slideshow π

A lovely selection, the London shots make me miss being able to day trip into the city. And I agree with above, the girl walking by the street art is a great match.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Helen π We’re spoiled being only 30/40 minutes from central London! I was pleased that girl came past when she did as I’d been waiting a few minutes to catch someone in the right spot!

Oh Sarah, what a fabulous month. Florals, street art and architecture with a touch of whimsy. The young woman and the art are so well matched
That Teddy Bear and the smiling wood cut made me smile.
Thanks for joining in The Changing Seasons π

Thanks so much Brian π It’s been a very good month and you’ve picked out some of my own favourite photos for comment!
