Nothing says Christmas quite like an abundance of colourful lights. Whether on your tree at home, adorning the exterior of houses or an official display, they lift the spirits and set the mood for a joyful festival. For those of many religions, or none, such displays symbolise the triumph of light over darkness, bringing warmth and hope during the winter season.
In recent years it has become a tradition to visit a light trail in the run-up to Christmas. There are always a number of these in London, and in the past we’ve enjoyed Syon Park’s offering. But until this year we’ve never made it to Kew, generally said to be the best of them.
The website promises:
It’s a botanical world brimming with seasonal cheer as twinkling lights and seasonal sounds fill the air. Discover glittering tunnels of light, dancing lakeside reflections and trees drenched in jewel-like colour.
We live very near Kew (just a bus ride away) and visit quite often. But as I said, we’ve never visited for this Christmas spectacular. That’s partly because it’s so popular. Tickets go on sale in February (!), and who knows in February when they’ll be free in December? By the time we think of booking, we’re always too late. But this year we got our act together a little earlier (October, not February) and managed to secure tickets.
We had our fingers crossed for decent weather that evening, and clearly the gods were smiling on us. It was dry and not especially cold for December. Perhaps you’d like to join us on our walk around the gardens? There’s lots to see and a rather spectacular finale. It should make for a rather different kind of Monday Walk for Jo. Of course I’m also sharing with Terri for her Festive Sunday Stills challenge!
We entered by the Victoria Gate, one of three possible start points, so my photos follow the trail in a loop from there.
Fire Garden
With over 200 candles on the grass in front of the Temperate House
Electric Avenue
Constantly shifting colours lit up this avenue of cherry trees, and you can guess what song we heard as we walked through
Tree Top Rock
With rock music playing under the treetops walkway (the walkway itself was closed, perhaps not thought to be safe in the dark)
Tree Top Rock
The colours were constantly shifting in time to the music
Festive arch
We walked under several arches like this although they weren’t a named feature, perhaps because they had no lights
Lili
An avenue of giant illuminated flowers
The Christmas Turkey Oak
Tiny twinkling fairy lights covered all the branches of this huge oak tree (and it really is called a Turkey oak)
Christmas Cathedral
My feature photo was also taken here, from further back to include the projected ‘Christmas at Kew’ slogan on the path
Robins Trail
A row of sparkling sequined robins either side of the path, and Rockin’ Robin playing as we walked through
Illuminated trees
In the stretches between the various installations the gardens’ trees were illuminated with different coloured lights, like this
Liquid Lake
Multicolour lasers and smoke playing across a sunken amphitheatre, accompanied by a haunting song
Christmas Symphony
Fountains playing in time to Christmas songs, with projections dancing across the façade of Kew’s famous Palm House
Christmas Symphony
This was too much of a spectacle to share only one image!
Christmas Symphony
A last still before I immerse you in the atmosphere of this grand finale to our walk
Christmas Symphony
A longish video clip but just a small fraction of the time we spent soaking up the atmosphere here

Absolutely beautiful, Sarah.

Absolutely stunning, Sarah! I feel such a country cousin these days with nothing spectacular to show for any special dates. I believe we are to have a firework display tonight on the Pier to celebrate the New Year but it will only last for half an hour at most, is at 6 o’clock (not the best of times for those preparing dinner) and is already attracting censure from animal lovers who want it stopped! I may go or may not. Having seen yours I feel less motivated. And like Jo, I love your Festive Arch and have never attained such clarity in my pictures.
Sarah Wilkie
It really was stunning in places, but I take no credit for that – it’s all down to a fantastic effort by the team at Kew and the various artists who designed the main pieces. I hope you do get to see the fireworks. I understand the concerns of animal lovers, but if fairly brief and well advertised (so pets can be kept indoors) I reckon these displays can be a great way of bringing people together and giving everyone a lift. Having said that, we’ll probably pass on the Newcastle ones this year and watch London on TV!

Happy New Year Sarah.
Feliz Año
Bonne Année.
🤗
Sarah Wilkie
Happy New Year to you too 🥂

Very nice. You are aware that electricity will be banned in 2030, aren’t you?
😉
Alison
Looks spectacular Sarah and I was singing in my head at the first photo! What a wonderful display and would definitely put you in the mood for Christmas.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Alison – it really did put us in the mood!
Monkey's Tale
What a beautiful display, but I can’t imagine having to buy tickets 10 or 11 months in advance!
Sarah Wilkie
No, that’s far too early! We got ours in late October but were limited in our choice of date and time
norasphotos4u
Amazing light displays!!
Sarah Wilkie
They are, aren’t they? Thank you Nora 🙂
Teresa
London is perfect when it comes to celebrating Christmas. Wish I could have stayed longer to see more. This is so magical, Sarah. Thanks for sharing.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – maybe another year? And next time you come we must meet up!
SoyBend
What a magical place, Sarah! You’re lucky you live nearby. Thanks for including the video of the dancing water. 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, we live in a great area of London and Kew is one of our local highlights – just a shame it’s a bit expensive!
pattimoed
Wonderful, Sarah! I love the images and the memories of our evening visit to the Kew to see Chihuly’s sculptures. Your experience looks great. World-class designs.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Patti 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed this and it brought back your own good memories of visiting Kew!
Tanja
Wonderful images. I was in London this weekend, walked around Richmond too. But didn’t go to Kew, had other plans
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Tanja 🙂 I know how much you enjoy London, glad you were able to visit again!
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
Just wow! What else to say? I keep meaning to go over to Edinburgh for the Botanci Gardens Christmas light show but somehow never get round to it. I can’t imagine it’s a patch on this though.
Sarah Wilkie
Glad you found this a ‘wow’ Anabel 😀 It was hard to do it justice in photos, and this is just a fraction of what we saw!

Gorgeous photos Sarah!
Wishing you all the best for Christmas!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, and Merry Christmas to you too 🎄✨
Suzanne
Now it feels like Christmas after seeing with this spectacular tour, and today I’ve finally baked our Christmas cake. Brilliant images, thanks, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Glad to have put you in the mood for Christmas Suzanne 🙂 I must admit I baked our cake soon after our return from Madagascar in mid November as I like to give it a few extra shots of brandy before I ice it!
Suzanne
Our first experience of snow during the festive season was such fun. I had to make ours closer to the time due to Les no being able to partake in alcohol. No bigger as I’m sure the sugar laden fruit will keep us jolly 😁
Sarah Wilkie
Ah yes of course – I’m sure it will be delicious just the same 🙂 I love all sorts of fruit cake!
Heyjude
Well they certainly know how to put on a show! Much better having a light show like this than wasting money on fireworks. Beautifully filmed too Sarah. We have been to light shows at the Eden Project and the Gardens of Heligan, but not this year, and I always hate having to drive home (an hour) from those places in the dark in often winter rain. So thank you for a lovely tour around Kew.
Sarah Wilkie
Definitely a good show Jude 🙂 We’re lucky that we can get a bus to Kew, as the parking is difficult around there, even though it would only be a short drive (c 15 minutes). I bet the Eden Project and the Gardens of Heligan put on good shows too though?
Heyjude
Yes, both locations put on a good show, nothing like Kew though! But once you’ve been to one they all seem very similar.
the eternal traveller
What a fabulous display. I follow Kew on Instagram, they post gorgeous photos all year round. And it is on my list for the next time we’re in London, but that’s not likely any time soon so thank you for taking me with you this time. Happy Christmas to you.
Sarah Wilkie
So glad you enjoyed this virtual visit. If you plan a real one some time in the future do let me know – as I said, it’s just down the road so we could maybe meet 🙂 Meanwhile, Happy Christmas to you too 🎄✨
the eternal traveller
That would be fun.
Anna
Kind of makes the “Perth Xmas light trail” look so shit. Lol. We took our daughter on Saturday and she loved it though, but I think if I took her to Kew she’d go wild! It looks amazing!!!
Sarah Wilkie
Oh yes, all the kids there clearly loved it and I’m sure she would too!
Regina Davis-Sowers
Thank you for taking us along.
Sarah Wilkie
You’re welcome, glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Marie
How lovely – I’ve never been to Kew – in any season. That oak tree is amazing…
Sarah Wilkie
It’s really worth a visit, not only at Christmas, but you need to make a day of it to justify the cost 🙂
margaret21
What a fantastic spectacle! And beautifully captured. Worth the money. Kew costs a bob or two, doesn’t it?
Sarah Wilkie
Definitely worth it 😀 No, Kew isn’t cheap unfortunately. We would go more often if it were, but with the prices they charge you really need to go for the best part of a day to justify it, you can’t just pop in for an hour which as locals we would like to do. Of course we could become members but that’s also not cheap and I doubt we’d go often enough to recoup the cost! So we usually only go when there’s something special on.
margaret21
Last time we went, it threw it down the whole rime we were there. It was 6d when I was a child ….
Graham Stephen
must have been wonderful to experience

It was indeed, thank you Graham 🙂

How lovely. Wishing you a Merry Christmas Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Helen, have a wonderful Christmas too 🎄
Brad M
Very nice light display. Reminds me of a couple in IL we attend regularly, but with a Midwest accent.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Brad 🙂 I think it’s nice when these displays have something of a local flavour to distinguish them.

How amazing you secured tickets when you did, Sarah. The Kew looks incredibly beautiful! All those lights and festive wonderments. You captured everything so brilliantly with your lens. Did you use a camera or phone? Great to see your post for Sunday Stills. Wishing you and your family a happy Christmas 🎄
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😀 We were glad we remembered to book in time this year! Some of the photos were taken with my compact Lumix camera and some with my phone. I was experimenting to see which would work best but there wasn’t a lot to choose between them! Happy Christmas to you too, whoever you are!
Egídio
What a festival of lights! Beautiful photos, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, it was indeed a festival!
Anne Sandler
Wow Sarah, what an effort put into those displays. Thanks for taking us on that walk. Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Sarah Wilkie
They do an amazing job Anne, they deserve their reputation as one of the best for sure!
grandmisadventures
Light displays at Christmas just feel so joyful and this looks like a great place to get in the spirit 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
It is exactly that – the atmosphere was so festive as we walked around, listening to the music as well as enjoying the lights 🙂
Easymalc
It’s worth the expense for such a spectacular show I reckon Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
I think so – and if you can’t spoil yourself at Christmas, when can you?!
Easymalc
Absolutely 🙂
thehungrytravellers.blog
Now if that visit doesn’t put people in the festive spirit then they must be proper bah humbug Scrooge types! I bet you felt properly in the swing of things after wandering round there, so much so that you just had to go and have a glass of festive cheer in that little pub over the road. I know I would have done! A great way to start Christmas (the walk, not necessarily the pub).
Sarah Wilkie
There was definitely a sense of collective festive spirit around the place 🙂 But we enjoyed our glasses of festive cheer while there, with some warming mulled wine and boozy hot chocolate!

Happy Christmas 🤶
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, and to you 🎄

Welcome 🙏

Don’t they do it well? I love a good light show. My favourite shot is your Festive Arch. It’s crystal clear- I can never achieve that. And that certainly is a finale, Sarah! We managed Temple Newsam in Leeds one year and the atmosphere was lovely. This year we’re spread between Leeds, Doncaster and Nottingham so not much chance. Have a wonderful Christmas and I’ll look forward to your adventures in the new year.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, Kew do an excellent job – mind, they charge more than many places so I guess they can afford to spend more on the display! Sounds like you’re going to have a busy Christmas 🙂 Have fun with all the family over here!
restlessjo
I didn’t like to ask the price but I surmised not cheap, especially if you want to take the family 😵🩵
