We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing
George Bernard Shaw
A recurrent theme in this blog is my contention that people are pretty much the same the world over when it comes to the basics. We all want to feel safe, to have enough to eat and to feel connected to others whom we love. What I have mentioned less often, is that we all also want to have fun from time to time. Whether well-off or poor, and wherever we live, we all need times when we can put aside any problems and find a way to relax and enjoy ourselves.
And it’s remarkable how similar our ideas of fun are, wherever we are. Adults enjoy music and dance, play board games, play or watch sports, or simply spend time relaxing with friends. Children like to play too of course, with toys, with each other or alone. They also enjoy engaging with pets and other animals.
For this week’s Lens Artists challenge Egidio asks what we do for fun. I think my monthly Changing Seasons posts give you all a good idea of my answer: travel, photography, cinema, art exhibitions, eating out …
But for my own post this week I have, as so often, gone off on a bit of a tangent. Since my own fun is found often in travelling and travel photography, I thought I would share images of other people having fun captured mainly on those travels. A couple however were taken much closer to home, including my feature photo of dodgems at the recent Ealing Blues Festival.
A few of these shots you will have seen before, but I couldn’t resist including them as they fitted the theme so well!

Wonderful. One of your best posts lately. (And your posts are always top!)
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much, that’s lovely to hear ☺️

The hide and seek photo is precious! And I also especially liked the dancers.
Sarah Wilkie
Those hide and seek kids were great fun Rith, both to watch and to photograph 🙂

Great collection of photos, especially of men playing chess all over the world, Sarah. As we’re in Palermo now, I’m partial to the shot taken there. Didn’t see anyone playing chess yesterday, though – will have to keep my eyes peeled for that today and tomorrow! Nice seeing the photos of the North Koreans enjoying themselves as I’d never seen anything like that before.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Annie 🙂 I hope you’re enjoying Palermo? We were only there for a day, tacked on to a football trip, and it was quite a long while ago now, so I can’t be sure, but I think those card players may have been in a small park near one of the gates, possibly the Porta Nueva? As for the North Koreans, they really aren’t any different, fundamentally, from the rest of us despite living under a very different regime!
Annie Berger
No luck finding any chess players here in Palermo, Sarah, but I fell in love with all the gorgeous balcony shots! I know you’re right about people in North Korea being the same in terms of enjoying fun activities, but I’d never seen anything that ‘human’ before vis-a-vis that part of the world so it caught me by surprise.
Sarah Wilkie
That’s the big bonus of visiting and seeing for yourself I guess!
Teresa
Love them all, Sarah. You’re so good at this type of photography. My favourite is the set with the kids and pigeons…also the boy with the bubble.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Teresa 😊 I enjoyed capturing those children, so engrossed and happy in their fun!

A wonderful post, Sarah – I agree with Sofia – you are the master of this kind of photography! And you capture the movement and the joy! I love your children playing and looking happy. I am too shy to photograph like that, but I try to improve. Maybe someday when I am too old to hesitate…Meanwhile, I will enjoy your splendid photos.
Sarah Wilkie
Haha, maybe I’m already too old! But actually this is something I’ve gradually developed the confidence to do over time. So glad you liked these results 😊

Your collections often capture my interest and set me thinking. This one simply made me smile over and over again.
Sarah Wilkie
Well that’s a lovely reaction to a ‘fun’ post – thank you Phil 😀

As Sofia noted, you are a master of street photography. I’d love to participate more in the genre, but I get really nervous asking others to take photos.
I especially love the photos of children and would love to capture kids in the act of play… but, you know… creepy old guy taking photos of kids…
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you John 😊 The whole point of street photography is NOT to ask – these are mostly candid shots. But I know what you mean about men photographing kids, it’s much easier for a woman I suspect. But even if you stick to adults you should be able to find plenty of interesting photo opps.
Sofia Alves
I love your post, Sarah. All your photo are brilliant, I think I’ve said before that you are the master of street photography… 😀
You’ve captured the magic of being a child in your last photos, starting with the hide-and-seek ones.
Sarah Wilkie
Aw, thank you Sofia 😊 I do enjoy street photography, as you know, and I was pleased with those hide and seek shots as the kids were so happy to play up to the camera!
Leanne Cole
These are wonderful Sarah, I love how you have shown the same activities but different cultures doing them. Wonderful images.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Leanne, that is something I was aiming to do 😊

What an excellent way of approaching this challenge Sarah. It had been puzzling me too. You might get to find that in my case, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 🙂 Feel absolutely free to imitate, I know I’ve done the same myself in the past when stuck for ideas!

Thanks!

Fun found, wonderful Sarah

HA! LOVE the header shot. As usual, too many superb photos to mention. Love all the kids shots, and fun in Pyongyang? Who knew?! As for me, I’ll settle for a LowDownDirtyHeartBreakingBLUES festival any day. Outstanding.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much John 😊 Oh yes, the people of Pyongyang (and elsewhere in North Korea) like to have fun just as anyone does, although their opportunities for it are maybe less as there’s a strong work ethic and responsibilities in the community on top of those at home. But on holidays all those shots were taken on their national holiday celebrating the birth of the country, like your July 4th), they can relax a bit and enjoy some fun 🙂 Our annual blues festival is great – a weekend of live music, street food and beer in a local park with very low admission prices and a real community feel!

Wow, what a fun collection fun.

Of fun

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 🙂

These all look like fun but the mini pigeon feeders are the cutest!
Sarah Wilkie
I think I’d agree with you, though the hide and seek girls and the baby goats run them close!
Sue
What a brilliant selection of photos to illustrate fun, Sarah! I especially like Playing hide and seek in Bhaktapur, Nepal, and the goats in Uzbekistan
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sue 😊 I had fun with those girls in Bhaktapur as they enjoyed playing up to my camera perhaps even more than their game of hide and seek!
Tina Schel
Absolutely loved your approach this week Sarah. At least 5 or 6 times as I went through I thought “Oh this is my favorite” and then another came along that made me re-evaluate the choices. They are all really wonderful and so much fun! I also smiled at your opening quote, which my younger brother wrote once an a birthday card for me. I’ve loved it ever since – and it is Oh So True. Really well done!
Sarah Wilkie
Aw, thank you Tina, I really appreciate this feedback 😊 And I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. What a good idea to use that quote on a birthday card
Egídio
Sarah, what a great way to have fun! I also love watching people. Your photos are full of life and fun.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Egidio, for both comment and inspiration 😀
Anne Sandler
What a great way to start my day Sarah. Thanks for your fun tour around the world.
Sarah Wilkie
Aw, thanks Anne 😊 I’m glad to have got your day off to a good start!
wetanddustyroads
You definitely captured the word “fun” beautifully in your photos … proof that people can have fun in different ways (and isn’t it great that sometimes it doesn’t even cost a cent to just have a little fun). Lovely photos.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, yes, that’s exactly the sort of thing I was trying to convey 😊 Fun doesn’t have to be expensive and if we’re open to it we can find it anywhere!
Alison
Loving all of these Sarah and I’m always fascinated by your photos of North Korea. Also found the Ukrainian chess playing men told a great story.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alison 😊 I’m glad you find the North Korean shots so interesting – it really was such a fascinating experience to visit there!
