I live in a busy London suburb and even though we have a nearby park which I love, it can’t really be described as peaceful. So when asked where I find peace and calm in nature, my answer has to be, that I find it most easily when I travel.
After a busy day exploring on our travels I confess that these days I welcome the comfort of a reasonably good hotel. And even better a hotel with a balcony and a view.
Or if there’s no balcony, perhaps there is a pretty garden in which to relax, with exotic flowers and birds. A seat with a view out to sea maybe, or towards mountains. Anything in fact that is restful on the eye while still feeling very far from home. There is no better way to relax.
I’m pretty sure that for this week’s Nature Photography challenge Denzil expected us to share a haven of peace rather closer to home, and I’ve already done just that. But as I said, there’s only so much peace you can find in a suburban park, so I decided on a follow-up.
Here then is a selection of spaces where I’ve had the pleasure of unwinding after a day exploring and photographing. It is perhaps not surprising that several of them are from Costa Rica where respect for nature and the environment is probably higher than anywhere else I have visited.

Lovely gallery of serene places. Nothing like a sunset to calm the heart. Love the one from Gambia.

Thank you Ruth, so glad you liked them 🙂 Ngala Lodge in Gambia is such a special place to stay, I’d like to go back one day!

You have such a talent for finding beauty wherever you are. These are outstanding, Sarah!
Sarah Wilkie
We are lucky to be able to treat ourselves to such places from time to time 😃

I wouldn’t mind being in any of these places and having views like that! I find peace just by looking at your pictures 🙂. The Senegal photo is my favourite … no, make it the view of Lake Quinault. Oh, and then there’s the Chile one. No, can’t decide – love them all!
Sarah Wilkie
Haha, I felt like that sometimes when see people’s photos 😄 And also when trying to decide my own favourites from these views – but I think for me it’s between Lagarta Lodge and Souimanga in Senegal

A fine selection. Thank you. You must have beat me already in the number of countries travelled. 😉

I haven’t counted recently but quite a few yes
Denzil
Wowza Sarah you have been to some remarkable places! Super photos. If you asked folk to vote, I’d go for the Chilean mountain scene!
Sarah Wilkie
That one is a stunning view, I agree, but as we couldn’t see it from our room I’ll go for Lagarta Lodge 😀

I’m with you on where to find peace, Sarah, and although I live in a very peaceful spot, I still have to travel to find that peace we all need at times. Somehow, no matter how peaceful, the world intrudes when I am still ‘at home’. Loved all your pictures as usual.
Sarah Wilkie
That’s very true – so much easier to switch off while away 🙂

We all need those beautiful peaceful moments to recharge the batery and remind us what is important
Sarah Wilkie
So true, thank you 😊

I’d love that balcony in Laos – could look out at that river forever!
Sarah Wilkie
We loved it too, at all times of day 🙂

I don’t often find reminders of my travels in your posts, you are so widely traveled. >grin<
I do have to say, however, that your photo of Sheridan Wyoming reminded me of the week I spent in the back country, tent in my backpack and not a single motorized vehicle in sight. Thanks for the memory. 🙂

I’m glad I brought back good memories for you John 🙂 We had a lovely stay in that B&B. The owner was an ex-Yellowstone ranger and very knowledgeable about the region. He took us out for a day in his 4×4, off-roading in the Big Horn Mountains!

Scrolling through this gallery certainly engendered a feeling of peace – and perhaps a little envy! Sunrises and sunsets always fo the business, don’t they?
Sarah Wilkie
I’m glad you caught that peaceful feeling Margaret 🙂

Some great views there, Sarah – and some recognisable ones too! We quite like to mix it up in terms of accommodation, some hotels, some apartments, airbnb places, plus the more quirky ones. But the constant theme is outdoor space, such as a balcony or courtyard etc….we always try and get something, wherever we can. And when you land one with a view like the ones you’ve shown here, it definitely makes a difference.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, outdoor space is a definite bonus, however simple or fancy the hotel. Most of these are among the better ones we’ve stayed in (views often come as a premium) but the one in Nong Khiaw was pretty simple as was Bracknell Forest (what a name for a hotel in India, btw!)

Loved Nong Khiaw, beautiful place. We thought of you the other day, as we returned home from Singapore, passing through West Ealing on the Elizabeth Line…
Sarah Wilkie
And through Ealing Broadway, even closer to me!
Alison
Such wonderful views Sarah, it’s always good to get a room with a balcony, somewhere to recharge before exploring once again
Sarah Wilkie
Definitely great to have a view, even if the hotel is quite simple like the one in Nong Khiaw! Thank you Alison 🙂
Sandy
Lovely photos. Most people seem to find peace and solace in wide open spaces. You’ve got a wonderful selection here.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Sandy 😀

I wonder what the statue that is looking out to sea signifies? Nothing like experiencing a sunrise to a stunning sunset. Lovely.
Sarah Wilkie
That hotel has a collection of art by various local artists dotted around the grounds and in the rooms – that is just one example. It represents a local woman I believe.

Lovely photos Sarah 🙂

Thank you Brian 🙂

Spectacular! With views like these it would be hard to leave.
Sarah Wilkie
True, but there is always somewhere new to explore, even if not everywhere can offer such views!

Sarah, you are so lucky to have the opportunity to relax and find peace in these beautiful places around the world. Thanks for sharing.
Sarah Wilkie
I am fortunate indeed Anne, and I do really appreciate that 😀
