And Life is Colour and Warmth and Light and a striving evermore for these
Into Battle, Julian Grenfell, World War One poet
Warm colours, such as reds, oranges, and yellows, are often associated with energy, passion, and warmth, evoking feelings of excitement and vibrancy. In photography they leap off the page or screen. It’s hard to ignore a warm-shaded image! The deeper warm shades suggest cosiness and comfort, while the brighter ones are sunny and cheerful.
For this week’s Lens Artists challenge Edigio asks us to make warm colours the main focus of our post. It’s not so long since I did something similar with red and yellow, for a Lens Artists post celebrating the primary colours. So today I wanted to create a single gallery showcasing a range of warm colours. I hope this will take you on a journey from the almost-cool pale yellows to the deepest of reds. It’s perhaps no coincidence that many were taken in Italy, a country full of warm colours.
Hover over an image to see where it was taken, or click any of them to open a captioned slideshow. I’ve tried to avoid including too many that I’ve shared previously but a few may have slipped through!

Where do you find the time to put together such perfectly composed posts? 😳
Sarah Wilkie
Ah thank you ☺️ It’s a fun exercise on a quiet morning!
equinoxio21
When do you have quiet mornings running around the world at Breakneck speed?
Sarah Wilkie
Despite appearances, we’re at home much more than we”re away!
equinoxio21
I understand. What shows on your blog is more your travels than home. Logical.

What a wonderful warm collage, Sarah! I really liked the egrets in silhouette, the Shinkyo Bridge, and the dancer.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, and for mentioning your favourites, I always like to hear which ones people particularly like 😊
susurrus
I loved your paint card of colours. Fascinating objects too. The door knocker with two faces caught my eye.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – I hadn’t thought of it but you’re right, it is a bit like a paint card!

What Margaret said….

Consider me warmed! What a gorgeous and uplifting wall of images, I’m trying to picture a living room or cafe space filled with these. Loving the scarf stall doggy and oh yes, Pastéis de Belém. I’ve had them in Macau but not yet in Portugal so there’s another thing on the list.
Sarah Wilkie
Happy to have warmed you Leighton 🙂 Those pastéis were photographed (and eaten!) at the original café in Belém. They say that you should only call them ‘Pastéis de Belém’ if they’re from Belém itself, otherwise they are Pastéis de Nata!
leightontravels
That’s right, I remember now, and indeed they were Pastéis de Nata that I had in Macau. Would be interesting to compare the two.
Sarah Wilkie
The ones from the Belém café are always good, those from elsewhere may well be great too but there are no guarantees they’ll taste like the real thing, though many do!
leightontravels
Well, all I can say for sure is that the Macau variety were outstanding. I just couldn’t stop myself from ordering more as we sat in the old quarter’s cobbled streets drinking coffee.

Oh I love the array of warmth and glow these pictures have 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Meg, I’m glad you enjoyed them 🙂

That whole collection shouts warmth and vibrancy!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Phil – I hoped it would do exactly that!
carabeinsplash
That was so FUN! What a fantastic idea to take us through the color wheel from yellow to red.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed it 😀
Heyjude
A wonderful display. Looking at the range of colours I have to say that peach and terracotta are my favourite colours.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jude 🙂 I think on reflection I agree with you about those colours – the middle part of this spectrum is the most appealing!
Sofia Alves
Wow, Sarah. So cleverly presented and my goodness, all photos are stunning. Did I spot some Pasteis de Nata there too 😉
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sofia 😊 You did indeed – and they’re the authentic Pasteis de Belem too, photographed in the original place there!

Beautiful gallery, Sarah! The gradation you arranged from yellow to red makes it more impactful!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed that presentation of the shots 🙂

Colour does brighten our spirits, and one of the reasons I love autumn even though it’s signalling the end of summer. Lovely images, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Suzanne 🙂 Of course, you’re moving into autumn over there just as we’re spotting the very early signs of spring! Hope you have a beautiful one 🙂
Suzanne
No sign of Autumn yet with temperatures hitting the late 20s. The Sth Is is where autumn is a stunner and further south of us. Though Maclaren Falls has some beautiful fall trees.

Door to dahlia…….fabulous Sarah 😍
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Brian, I hadn’t thought of that clever alliteration 😀

I probably said super Sarah too 😁

Oh yes, Italy never disappoints, but so many others places to enjoy with your warmth. Calle Stuart was an interesting mix. I love the yellows, especially the door knocker. And more…the way you morphed us into the entire spectrum of warm colors.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Donna 😊 As I’ve said to the others, I enjoyed playing around with these images to get them in the ‘right’ order! I wondered about including Calle Stuart because of the cooler blue on the street sign but I decided the touch of that contrast helped balance all the rest – glad you liked it!
Alli Templeton
Goodness, Sarah, summer has come early! 🙂 What a brilliant splash of warmth on my screen! I can’t imagine how anyone could match this vibrant response to the challenge. A wonderful taste of the med! 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alli 😊 We certainly need all the warmth and brightness we can get at the moment, so I enjoyed wallowing in my sunniest images to pick out some for this post!
Marie
Beautifully assembled Sarah – I’d say you loved putting it together. My favourite part of your spectrum is the orange merging into the reds, the Italian lamp and Moroccan gentleman in particular….
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Marie 😊 That lamp is typical of Bologna for me, a very stylish city! And full of good food, which always helps too 😆
Leya
I can only agree with so many other commenters – a great way to display your gorgeous images, and they are all vividly warm despite the cooler ones from the start. Well done.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much, I’m happy you liked them 😀
JohnRH
Great photos. Marrakesh guy and red fish net are among my many faves.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you John, I’m always interested to hear which images people pick out as favourites 🙂
Tina Schell
Beautiful gallery Sarah, I too love the way you took us from pale to lush and everything in between – very creative. An abundance of glorious color, well done!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Tina 😊 I enjoyed myself with this them, and it was great to have a reason to brighten our dull February days!
Egídio
Wow, Sarah! What a journey you presented here! These are beautiful photos. How can one not love the little dog?! All are such beautiful photos. Your idea to go from pale yellows to bright reds was very creative and produced a wonderful response to the challenge. Thank you for joining in!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much, both for the lovely comments and the inspiring theme! As soon as I thought of the title, Getting warmer, I knew I wanted to illustrate that somehow in my choice of images 🙂
Anne Sandler
Wonderful response Sarah! You captured color, textures and feelings. From peeling paint to portraits, it was wonderful.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Anne 😊 I had fun with this one!
Amy
What a fabulous warm color gallery, Sarah! I love the varieties of your selections. All are beautifully captured.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy, so glad you enjoyed it 😀
Ritva Sillanmäki Photography
Sarah, your photos from cold lemon yellow to warm to tones is lovely. The fishing net, I had a similar one, why did not that one. A great choice. Calle Stuart also spoke to me as did the other samples of wall with cracked paint. Beautiful collection.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much 😊 Somehow I can never resist taking a photo of peeling paint!
wetanddustyroads
Wow, these colours are intense! The red is lovely and bright, but it’s the yellow that catches my attention. Or maybe it’s just because I stared at the Pasteis de Belem for too long …
Sarah Wilkie
Hah yes, that plate is very tempting! And taken in the original cafe in Belem 😀 Glad you enjoyed the colours!
margaret21
I love the way your gallery evolves from temptingly tepid to blazingly bold. I’m not sure that those egrets don’t steal the show!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret – I had fun sorting these to create that effect 🙂 I guess you’re home now and feeling the chill?
margaret21
It’s not TOO cold. But a little more dismal!
