Now every field is clothed with grass, and every tree with leaves; now the woods put forth their blossoms, and the year assumes its gay attire.
Virgil
The above quote from Virgil, who lived in the first century BCE, is a reminder that spring has inspired writers throughout the centuries. I wonder if itโs the most written-about season of all?
Certainly there is no shortage of lovely quotations available through a quick internet search. And no shortage of spring photos either! Iโve posted a lot myself recently (havenโt we all, those of us in the Northern Hemisphere at least?!) But I couldnโt resist sharing some more, albeit with a twist. So for Marshaโs Writers Quotes Wednesdays challenge Iโve had some fun editing some of my photos of spring blossoms, using the Vintage filters in Color Efex Pro. I then overlaid the images with a few favourite quotations I already knew (the Housman, Shelley, Manley Hopkins and Sitting Bull); and I added others from my search that especially appealed to me.
All of the blossoms were photographed in my home suburb of Ealing in recent springs, and the quotations added with Canva. I hope you enjoy!

What I’ve noticed about all the ‘Spring quotes’ is that they’re all positive
I should start using Canva!

You’re right Gloria, I don’t think there are many negative quotations about spring – only ‘April is the cruellest month’ comes to mind! Canva is great – easy to use and free unless you want lots of bells and whistles.

I love your spring blossoms … almost as much as I like your quotes! Have a happy and colourful spring Sarah.
I am however looking forward to our winter now (it was a HOT summer) … and then, in 5 months’ time, it will be our turn for wild spring flowers ๐ธ.

Thank you ๐ How cold does it get in your winter? It’s not a season I ever look forward to, apart from Christmas and you don’t have the pleasure of that to brighten dull days!

I’m almost ashamed to say how cold it gets in winter ๐ … on a VERY cold day, maybe 13 degrees Celsius. But I think the average temperature for our winter is probably around 16 degrees Celsius. It is quite mild compared to the inland areas of South Africa, but it never gets that cold at the coast where we live. It’s our rainy season, which means green forests, streams and waterfalls galore (with lovely sunny days in-between).

That’s not cold at all!! Probably warmer than our spring, on average, although we did touch an unseasonably warm 18 degrees last week. This week we are back to single figures, unfortunately ๐ฅถ

How lovely, Sarah. Great choices of quotes and beautiful pictures. It doesn’t get better than this.

Thanks so much Marsha, I’m glad you approve ๐

Lovely pictures and quotes – makes me so happy that Spring is here at last ๐
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, yes, me too – although we seem to be heading back to winter this week!

When I think of spring by a poet, I default to “I wandered lonely as a cloud” which we had to memorize in the 5th or 6th grade. Bob said he didn’t know that poem. I thought every grade school child had to memorize it
Sarah Wilkie
I’m a little surprised too that Bob doesn’t know that poem – it’s so often quoted. I thought about including it but then I’d have had to use a daffodils photo and I wanted to stick with blossom in this post ๐

Beautiful photos to match the quotes. I’m glad spring is here.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks – me too!

These are all absolutely lovely, so pretty to look at and so delightful to read. My favorite from this post; โBlossom by Blossom the Spring Beginsโ.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Rose, I’m happy you enjoyed this ๐

Wonderful and inspiring springtime creations, Sarah. We are on a spring mind meld. ๐ Your flower shots are gorgeous.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jane – I can never resist photographing the spring blossom each year even though it looks exactly the same as the previous year, so I had plenty to choose from for this gallery!
