For you know that it’s a fool who plays it cool, by making his world a little colder
Paul McCartney, Hey Jude
Why does ‘cool’ sound so good and ‘cold’ much less so? We admire someone for being cool (aka trendy or easy-going) but are put off by another’s coldness. And while we may welcome the cool of an evening after a hot summer’s day, only a few of us enjoy really cold weather.
When it comes to colours, while the hot shades of red, orange and yellow make a big splash, the cooler ones may be easier to live with as they evoke a sense of calm, serenity, and tranquillity. These are the colours of nature, the sea, the sky, grasslands and forests. Blue is associated with coolness and peace, and green with balance and freshness.
Some cool places
For this week’s Lens Artists challenge John asks us to share Cool Colours. I enjoy compiling a colour-themed gallery but to give this one focus I’ve chosen to pair two definitions of the word cool by narrowing my selection of cool colours to places that can also be described as cool. I’m using ‘cool’ here in the sense of temperature, rather than the colloquial meanings of ‘fashionable’ or simply ‘great’. If I were to go by those definitions I would be including some very hot places too! Indeed, as I find interest wherever we travel, almost any destination would find its way into that collection.
No, today I want to focus on places that were decidedly chilly but no less beautiful for that. They are all destinations that I’ve featured in previous posts, some numerous times. So I’ve kept these galleries fairly small and tried to include at least some shots you won’t have seen before.
Antarctica
While I would include myself among those who don’t enjoy cold weather, some places are so beautiful that it’s easy to ignore the cold! And in fact, to my surprise, the January temperatures we experienced visiting Antarctica were on a par with, and at times a little higher than, those in London at the same time! My feature photo was of course taken here.
Norway
I have visited Norway several times, in winter, spring and summer. The photos below were taken on two of those visits: a winter visit to Tromsø and the far north, and a more recent late spring visit to several places on the coastal route from Trondheim to Tromsø. With Tromsø lying above the Arctic Circle, on my first visit the sun only rose above the horizon on our last day, and on the second it never set! But even on that second trip the weather was most definitely chilly, with snow on the day we visited the Lofoten Islands.
Iceland
As with Norway, I have made both winter and spring visits to Iceland. I know I have shared photos from this stunning country many times before, but I can’t resist doing so again as it’s perfect for this theme.
Torres del Paine
This is another place you’ll have seen in previous posts, so I’ve tried to find some different shots this time around. And while it wasn’t exactly chilly during our visit, it was certainly ‘cool’ (as in ‘awesome’!) and the colours were definitely so.
I visited Antarctica in 2003, Norway in 2013 and 2023, Iceland in 2012 and 2018, and the Torres del Paine in 2016

Beautiful blues, chilly but striking!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Ruth – I agree, a bit chilly 😀
Annie Berger
So glad I read these ‘chilly’ posts on a gloriously warm day here in Colorado, Sarah! Wonderful shots of each locale – I have a particular fondness of Antarctica so that’s my favorite this time. Annie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie 🙂 They do look rather chilly when all posted together like this, I agree!
wetanddustyroads
Cool photos (as in cool colours), cool photos (like the youngsters would say, “Oh, these pictures are cool”) and definitely cold (yes, as in it makes me feel cold now). Lovely selection for this post!
Sarah Wilkie
Aw thank you 😊 I was aiming to match all those meanings of cool with these images, I’m so pleased you think I succeeded!
thehungrytravellers.blog
It’s taken an age to get strong enough wifi to be able to open your photos, but I’m so glad I persevered. They’re so good that I shivered when studying them 😂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you for that perseverance 😊 I hope it’s warm enough where you are now that the shivering wasn’t too much of a pain!
JohnRH
Oh yeah. Those are cool photos! Excellent. 👏
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you John 😀

Oh I love these so much! Winter scenes are always a favorite. I’ve been trying to signal to the universe that it is time for cooler days, but as yet it has not happened.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Meg 🙂 Personally I’d rather delay the onset of winter a bit! It’s already feeling a bit autumnal here and we’ve barely had a summer!
grandmisadventures
If you will send some of your autumn here I will happily send you the rest of our summer 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
It’s a deal! Although actually autumn is my favourite season – can I perhaps send you some winter instead? 😁
grandmisadventures
Deal! I’ll happily take some winter too 🙂
Sofia Alves
Brilliant gallery, Sarah. These are beyond cool 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sofia 😊

Lovely photos of cool or is that cool places… 😉
This post is timely as can you believe it’s quite hot in Lviv right now…last time we were here it was -20C and snowing.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nilla 🙂 So you’re in Lviv again? I’ll look forward to reading about it …

Yes, have been here for 6 weeks this time volunteering with the same locals. The massive attacks across the whole country have been fierce the last couple of days. Lots of air raid sirens, power cuts, but we still manager to weave nets for the frontline.
Sadly, we leave on Thursday with a bus over the border into Krakow. There for 2 nights then a long train journey to Frankfurt and fly back to Australia on the 4th of September. Had to cut our travel plans a little short as our tenants didn’t renew for another year. Still, 18 months travel is better than no travel. 😉
Sarah Wilkie
Safe travels back home!

Thank you, it’s going to be a very long trip but the 4 nights in Frankfurt should break it up a little before the long flights home.

Cold is colder than cool. Someone who is cool to you is just a little reserved. Someone who gives you the cold shoulder is actively disliking you.
I don’t mind cold so much as excess heat. It’s supposed to be over 100 deg F here tomorrow. You can always put on more clothes but there is a limit to what you can take off. And there is a point where it doesn’t help, and a fan doesn’t help and just makes you hotter.
Anyway there is a photo context I participate in and the current challenge is to find blue in nature that is NOT the sky or water. (Water is clear and I feel that the water color is often the reflection of the sky.) My picks (leaving out blue birds and blue flowers which were too easy) were the blue eyes of my daughter, and the blue morpho butterfly. And then I thought about including the blue glacier ice but eventually I used a shot taken when diving because all the colors except blue are gradually filtered out. (And eventually blue disappears too)
Red is associated with danger – poison berries, red in a poisonous coral snake. I think that is why tomatoes weren’t quickly accepted.
As always, wonderful photos. You should go to Alaska before it melts
Rosalie
Sarah Wilkie
Hi Rosalie 🙂 Yes, I agree with that distinction. I find both excessive cold and excessive heat hard to tolerate, but at least with the former you can pile on more clothes and/or stay indoors. Heat follows you everywhere!
That challenge sounds interesting and you came up with some great ideas. I would have gone with the butterfly too, I love blue morphos 🙂 Glad you enjoyed the photos, and yes, we really must get to Alaska!
Leanne Cole
Wow Sarah these are so beautiful and a wonderful response to the challenge.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Leanne, I’m pleased you thought so 😊
Easymalc
You’ve excelled yourself again here Sarah. All beautiful places and brilliantly captured.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you as always Malcolm 😊 Glad you enjoyed seeing these places!

I felt cooler just looking at your cool captures.

Thank you Nora 🙂

Beautiful photos. I’m not fond of the cold either but sometimes it’s worth it.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – it’s definitely worth braving the cold in places this beautiful!
Michele Lee
A spectacular cool escape during this hot day. Thank you!

Thank you Michele, I’m glad to have cooled you off 😀

So you haven’t been to Alaska? But you’ve been to Antarctica! Wow. 🙂 That’s a good point about “cool” and “cold.” And of course you find interest wherever you travel! 😉 Your Antarctica photos are breathtaking. Your Norway photos confirm what I know – I would love it there! I recognized Iceland right away and especially like the last four images of it. I plead ignorance and had to look up Torres del Paine but assumed it must be in Chile. Wow. Don’t you love the way the ice fractured in those last two photos?
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Lynn 😊 No, we’ve not (yet) been to Alaska, although as I mentioned on your post we’re seriously considering it for next year. Given how much you liked it and also Iceland, I know you would also enjoy Norway a lot, especially the northern areas. Yes, Torres del Paine is in Chile – Patagonian Chile to be more precise. I should have said so, but I guess I thought I’d posted about it enough that my readers might already know – a silly assumption for which I apologise! You would love it there too, by the way 🙂
bluebrightly
When you said you’re seriously considering it I thought maybe that would be a second trip – it’s such a big place, you could go back many times. Anyway, I hope it works out at some point. Oh, I know I’d love Patagonia! And so many other places…sigh. 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
I’m sure it would merit several trips but as it’s so fare from us and there are so many other places still to see, one visit will have to suffice 🙂
Heyjude
Now these images are what I would describe as cool. Another great gallery Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Jude 😀

The ice and snow convey cool very well Sarah

Thank you Brian 🙂

Beautiful photos, Sarah. I liked your introduction, as always, and I like the curved edges on the photos in the gallery. Very cool!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much 🙂 I used Modula to create the galleries which has options for borders and for rounded corners, but you can do the latter in the standard WP tiled gallery too.
Egídio
Sarah, these are way beyond cool. What a stunning gallery!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Egidio 😊
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
The Antarctica photos are wonderful, especially the featured image. Love the sculpted look as well as the blue.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anabel 😀 They do look a bit like sculptures, yes!
Monkey's Tale
As much as I say I hate winter, I must admit the cool temperatures do bring out beautiful scenes and a crisp sky. You’ve captured that beauty very well. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Maggie 😊 I agree about winter – I don’t like the cold but on a bright crisp day the conditions can be super for photography!
Tina Schell
As always, masterfully done Sarah. Agree with you the the beauty of these places far outweighs the discomfort of the cold. That said, I’ve steadfastly resisted temptation to visit Antartica although everyone I know who has been there says it is the most beautiful place they’ve ever been. I suppose I’ll have to satisfy myself with beautiful images like yours, which are my favorites among this wonderful set 😊.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Tina 😊 Truly Antarctica wasn’t nearly as cold as I’d expected – a few degrees ABOVE freezing most days. And although the nights were colder, we were in a nice warm ship!
Sue
I must say I did feel cold looking at these! Great selection
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Sue 🙂 But sorry to have made you feel the cold!
margaret21
I felt decidedly chilly as I looked through this post. No … wait … that’s because it IS cold today. August Bank Holiday, eh? Seriously though … the first and last four are particularly atmospheric.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 😊 We’re luckier than you down here as we’ve had quite a pleasant day. Not a heatwave but warm enough to sit outside for coffee. I thought of you as we were wandering around Spitalfields and Brick Lane this morning!
margaret21
Ah, spotting a few changes since we were there no doubt!
Sarah Wilkie
A few new pieces yes – some may find their way into my end of month Changing Seasons post 😀

Awesome cool scenery in cool colors Sarah! I love your images.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Anne 😊

I, too, am not a fan of “cold.” My niece and her husband keep asking us to go to Antarctica with them, but I keep resisting. >gringrin<)
Sarah Wilkie
Really it wasn’t nearly as cold as I was expecting! I’d taken thermal underwear but after the first day I left it off as I was too hot during a landing 😀
