When you remove the colour from an image you see other aspects of your subject more clearly. Shape, form, texture all stand out more without the distraction of colour, and monochrome highlights the contrasts between them.
I’m thrilled to have been invited by Leanne to act as occasional host for Monochrome Madness, as she introduces themed challenges. My chosen theme for my first post is texture. And as I’m just back from a trip to Mexico and have been sorting the several thousand photos I took there, I’ve decided to use some of them here. Well OK, I’ll be honest; I knew while I was away that I’d be hosting this on my return, so many of these were shot specifically with texture in mind. All were shot in colour however, and later converted using Nik Silver Efex Pro, my go-to for monochrome work.
I’m looking forward to seeing your monochrome texture images. Whether you choose from the natural world (animals, plants, rocks perhaps) or man-made objects, there are a wealth of textures out there, just waiting to be photographed!
By pure serendipity, John has asked us share photos illustrating one of four compositional tools for the Lens Artists challenge this week, and as one of those tools is texture I’m taking the opportunity to link to him too. I’m sure he won’t mind!
So let’s play Animal, Vegetable or Mineral …
Click on any image in the galleries below for a caption and to open a slideshow
Animal textures
Not many of these as it wasn’t really a wildlife holiday. Until we got to Baja California Sur, that is, where we saw lots of seabirds and more than a few whales!
Vegetable textures
Many more to choose from here as the plant life of Mexico is fascinating to photograph, from cacti to palm trees and much more.
Mineral textures
Plenty of rocks around in Mexico too!
Please do join in with some examples of your own, and leave a comment with a link either below and/or on Leanne’s page (pingbacks rarely work on my blog for some unknown reason).
I visited Mexico in February 2024

I almost wanted to pull my finger over the pictures to feel the different textures. The whale photo is beautiful.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you again 🙂 Seeing those whales so close was amazing!
rkrontheroad
A very interesting collection! You have an eye for black and white.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Ruth 🙂 It’s an ‘eye’ I’ve tried to develop over recent years, and blog challenges really help to push me to do so!
Marie
The cacti and feathers work particularly well don’t they…..
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Marie – yes, I thought so 🙂

Nice choices for the challenge, Sarah. I liked the bird preening its feathers and the close up of the cactus spines. They really stand out in black and white.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Siobhan 🙂 The frigate birds were a welcome extra sight on one of our whale watching trips. Some of the males were showing their red throats but that’s for a future post, in colour of course!

Wow, Sarah. I love the abstract feel to this post, it works so, so well. Now, that is the best looking tripe I’ve ever seen (not that I’d eat it…!)
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sofia 😊 I know what you mean about the tripe, it even looked quite good in the original colour version – but no, I don’t really fancy eating it!

What I love about textures in black and white is that without the context of color, it is sometimes difficult to immediately identify what it is. Great pictures of textures 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Meg 🙂 Yes, you often get a semi-abstract look with black and white, especially close-ups.

I love the plant textures, Sarah, they’re very well done. But what’s the one on the lower left of the first group? Am I going to be sorry I asked??? 😉
Sarah Wilkie
I don’t know if this answer will make you sorry 😆 It’s tripe, for sale in a market (btw, you should be able to see all the captions by clicking on the images as I mentioned – did that not work for you or did you miss that tip?)
bluebrightly
I missed it – too many hours in front of the screen – and it works and I see it now. 🙂 Thanks! And yes, that’s what I figured, trips or the like.

I enjoy abstract images that can change with each view, seeing something new within it. Well done, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – yes, I guess a lot of these have a semi-abstract look 🙂

These are amazingly wonderful 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you for that lovely feedback 😊

Gorgeous gallery of textures, Sarah. Perfect in monochrome to bring them out properly.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Ann-Christine 😊

I was fooled by the tripe! I thought it must be some kind of sea creature. My mother used to buy tripe for the dog, even in my pre-veggie days I could never imagine eating it.
Sarah Wilkie
I know what you mean, it has the sinuous quality of a sea creature for sure!

Nothing wrong with “double-dipping” on the challenges. Texture is especially emphasized in monochrome images. You have so many beautiful examples, I can’t begin to pick any favorites.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you John, it was great to be able to link with your challenge too 🙂

Very nice examples Sarah. I also went with nature for this one 🙂. https://flightsofthesoul.wordpress.com/2024/03/07/textures-in-monochrome/

Fantastic choices to show texture, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂
Leanne Cole
Great set of textures Sarah. I really like how you divided them up. It was a hard challenge for me, I really had to think about it, so thank you for the host this week.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Leanne 🙂 My pleasure to host, as you know!
Dawn M. Miller
Gorgeous images. I especially love the cacti.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Dawn – you can’t beat a cactus for texture 😀

There’s something odd about this pingback Anne – it appears to be to your edit page rather than the actual post and I can’t access it. But I found your post via your home page (https://annegeephoto.com/2024/03/06/monochrome-madness-textures-in-black-and-white/). It’s a beautiful image!

My favourite is the whale but mainly because I love these creatures!
Sarah Wilkie
It was great to be able to see so many there 🙂

Love the pelican feathers, Sarah, and the cacti respond surprisingly well to black and white.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jo 🙂 That pelican was a very tight crop, I was pleased it came out ok!

So glad to hop into a monochrome madness hosted by you today, Sarah! Your collection is simply outstanding. Love that whale fin–was that shot in La Paz, Baja, or on the Pacific coast? Here is mine this week, I offer two monochrome sunflower buds with which I double-dipped for the L-A challenge. https://secondwindleisure.com/2024/03/06/wordlesswednesday-a-sunflower-demonstrates-tools-of-composition/
I’m still not sure why I don’t get your post notifications to my email. Another thing for WP to fix 🙁
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Terri 😊 The whale fin is a grey whale off the Pacific coast (near Puerto Lopez Martinez). We did also see blue whales in the Sea of Cortez, on a boat trip out of Loreto. And thanks for joining in – off to check out your post now!
bushboy
Great examples Sarah. Love the whale fin and the macros of cacti are brilliant 😍

Thank you Brian, and thanks for your contribution which I just found 🙂

I don’t know where you find your inspiration!
Sarah Wilkie
That’s not something I consider or have any difficulty with – the problem is finding the time to post and also avoiding doing so too often and frightening people off!!

I found some…hope you like it! https://wanderingteresa.com/textures-in-b-w/

All are amazing shots and textures, but I am most attracted to your animal photos. Wonderful 👍

Thanks so much Teresa 😊 It wasn’t the most obvious location for animal shots but I was pleased to find some!

These are stunning! I love the deep contrast and simplicity of black and white pictures. I find that compared to colourful designs where catchy colours help the design to stand out, in black-and-white designs the ability to stand out depends only on its ability to communicate rather than on its appealing visual presentation, and you’ve done it splendidly. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
Sarah Wilkie
That’s really lovely feedback, thank you Aiva 😊

Wow, I can really feel as well as see the textures in these shots. I think the mineral shots work very well, and all of them really respond to being shown in monochrome.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Margaret 😊 You’ll probably see most of them again later, in colour – and indeed, the animal and vegetable shots too!
margaret21
Excellent! You’ve helped me decide on my own response to this week’s LA Challenge. I couldn’t find a focus, but I’ve decided imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Watch this space!
