The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words
Elliott Erwitt
And yet sometimes a few words can enhance a viewer’s understanding of an image. After all, what else are captions for, if not to explain?
I am late contributing to this, one of my favourite challenges, this month. My excuse is a busy Easter weekend which coincided with the end of the month. My March highlights post took precedence, and this one has consequently lagged a little behind. But I’m sure Paula won’t mind!
As always I haven’t stuck only to Paula’s five words, as I like to tell you a little bit about each photo. However I do try to be more succinct for this challenge than for most of my posts!
This month my photos will take you to Botswana, North Korea, Vietnam and two of the United States, New Jersey and Washington.
FLOATING
Fishing boat in Bai Tu Long Bay, Vietnam
Our ‘Halong Bay’ cruise actually spent more time in neighbouring Bai Tu Long Bay. It looks very similar to, and just as picturesque as, Halong Bay itself but fewer boats go there. Although we certainly didn’t have it to ourselves, there were more local fishing boats than cruise boats.
OVERLOOKING
Looking from North Korea across the DMZ to a South Korean guard post
And of course while North Korean soldiers keep a very close eye on their neighbours, their South Korean counterparts do the same. You should just be able to make some out to the right of the central tower.
PRECOCIAL
Young gull eating a horseshoe crab, Higbee Beach, New Jersey
This beach on the western side of the Cape May Peninsula, facing Delaware Bay, is a magnet for birders. When we visited a lot of horseshoe crabs had been washed up on the sand, providing the gulls with a feast.
ROSY
Sunset in the Okavango Delta, Botswana
I’ve shared this photo before but to me this sky is the very definition of ‘rosy’!
SEEDY
Grass seed head, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington State
Our second day in the park was rather foggy, so I concentrated mainly on macro shots of the wild flowers and grasses.

A beautiful gallery for this challenge, Sarah!the seedy is stunning.

Thank you Amy 😊 The seedy shot was a case of making the most of a disappointing day and ending up rather pleased with the result!

That rosy sunset is stunning! 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
It’s definitely the favourite in this bunch, most people love a good sunset!
Paula
What a fitting quote, but I do appreciate your words too :). Sarah, you are never late. I am thrilled with your photos as always. One can’t get too many Botswana sunsets. I appreciate your virtual tours to places that I will never see in person. Thank you 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Aw, thank you Paula 🤗 I really appreciate your kind feedback, and I’m glad you enjoy these virtual visits!
Wind Kisses
Always great galleries. The floating boat and the seeds for me.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Donna 😊 The seeds are generally popular but you’re the first to pick out the boat!
Rose
Like many others, I love the sunset shot.😍 It ‘feels’ peaceful, bright, and hopeful. It’s like looking at life through rose-colored glasses.
Sarah Wilkie
Oh, I love your idea that the sunset shot is ‘like looking at life through rose-colored glasses’! Thank you Rose 😊
Annie Berger
The seed shot is the one for me. Seeing the beauty in the little things that we so often overlook is my takeaway.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie 😊 To be honest on that particular day it was really only the little things we could see well enough to photograph as the mountains were hidden in the fog!

Well, for seedy, I would definitely have posted some of those dodgy bars in Phnom Penh! That is one gorgeous sunset photo, mind you..
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Phil 😀 I did start by trying to go down the route of that definition of seedy, but we didn’t encounter those particular bars!
the eternal traveller
Your sunset photo is gorgeous.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, it’s a bit of a favourite of mine 🙂

Your rosy sunset is just beautiful, and the rest of the photos are just as interesting.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂 All the sunsets in the Okavango were amazing but it was only on that particular evening that we got this rosy glow.
Anne Sandler
Thanks for taking me to places that I won’t see otherwise. I always enjoy your images.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Anne, I’m always happy to take you along!
margaret21
Well, you dealt with all that with aplomb. Even ‘precocial’!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 🙂 I confess precocial threw me for a while!
Alli Templeton
With shots like this, Sarah, I’m sure Paula wouldn’t mind your contribution being slightly late! Fab, as always. That Botswana sunset is divine. 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alli 😊 I’m in danger of over-using that Botswana shot, it’s a particular favourite of mine!
Alli Templeton
I don’t think there’s any danger of over-using the Botswana shot. You could use it in every post and I’d still think it was awesome. 🙂
