Rows and floes of angel hair
Ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I’ve looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and they snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
Joni Mitchell
One of my favourite songs, by one of my favourite singers, captures perfectly the duality of clouds (and of life). Clouds can look beautiful, enhancing any photo of the sky. They can inspire us to see animals, palaces and more hidden in their shapes. And they can give us welcome shade on the hottest of days. They are also a photographer’s delight, in moderation, as they make skies so much more interesting.
But clouds also bring storms, rain and snow. They turn a summer picnic into a dash for shelter, and they hide a view you climbed a mountain to see. And uniform dull cloud cover can really dampen our spirits.
I’ve tried to bring out both sides of clouds in my images below, chosen for this week’s themed Monochrome Madness, hosted by Brian. There are pretty clouds and stormy clouds, clouds that enhance a landscape and clouds that obscure it. Clouds from my travels and some much closer to home.
All shots have been edited using Nik Silver Efex Pro, including the use of a slight selenium toning.
Can anyone else see the happy elephant in this cloud above the Okavango Delta in Botswana?!
This sunset was also captured in the Okavango Delta, as was my featured shot (the clouds there were possibly the most photo-worthy I’ve seen anywhere)
Another sunset, this one photographed from Lagarta Lodge on the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
Blue sky and clouds in northern Costa Rica
A glimpse of Quito through the clouds, from Volcan Pichincha, Ecuador
I’m including this one for Becky following a conversation about our stubborn optimism in heading up mountains to enjoy a view we know we probably won’t see due to bad weather! On this occasion it was obvious before we even got in the cable car that we were wasting our time, but …
But thankfully clouds weren’t hiding Chile’s Torres del Paine when we visited! This is the view from Laguna Azul.
Cloud-draped hillside by Lago Todos los Santos, also in Chile, where we were a lot less lucky with the weather!
Back to sunsets, this one over the Mekong in southern Laos
A rain storm approaching the City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico
And a bigger storm approaching the city of Grants in the same state
Talking of rain storms, here’s one retreating from Kaštel Kambelovac in Croatia and heading towards Split in the distance

I love me a bit of Joni Mitchell Sarah, so this post got off to a great start. Then came the beautiful photographs 🙂 Yes I can see the cheerful elephant. Hard to pick out a favourite but I particularly like the cloud-draped hillside in Chile (looks like a painting), while the southern Laos sunset is stunning.

Thanks so much Leighton 😊 I’m a big Joni fan so was glad of the excuse to use one of her songs here! I’m very pleased you saw the elephant and found other favourites too.
Monkey's Tale
Well somehow I was unsubscribed. WP Games. All fixed, for now anyway 😊 Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
WP games indeed 🙄

Wonderful clouds, I love the Torre del Paine picture, but it’s a sentimental spot for me. I haven’t been seeing your posts on my Reader lately, so I may re-follow and see if that helps. Maggie

Thank you. We were so lucky with the weather in the Torres del Paine NP. Apparently it had been so dull and rainy in the week before our visit that no one had been able to see any of the high peaks!

Beautiful collection- I really love the pictures of looking down through the clouds in Ecuador and Montenegro
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Meg 🙂 Those are two of my own favourites, I love to see and photograph mist and low clouds over mountains like that!

Great collection, you could almost attribute a “mood” to each picture’s title. My daughter’s just been to see Joni Mitchell at the Hollywood Bowl a few weeks ago, said it was one of the best gigs she’s ever been to.
Sarah Wilkie
Oh wow, I would love to have been at that concert, I’m a big fan!
Suzanne
Clouds are so underrated and your images are stunning, Sarah and your words that accompany them. Wonderful.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Suzanne, I’m so pleased you liked these shots 😊
BeckyB
beautiful words, and incredible shots
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Becky 😊

You are right about Okavango Delta clouds being very photo-worthy! Just amazing – and yes, I saw the elephant.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anabel 😊 I’m so pleased you too can see the elephant!
Egídio
Beautiful monochrome clouds, Sarah. I agree with you about the featured photo. The clouds and reflections are amazing.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Egidio 😊 I’ve never seen so many great skies as we witnessed in the Okavango – I could have filled this whole post just with them!
Jim Earlam
Nice words Sarah, and nice pictures. I think I even saw the elephant 🐘
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jim, I’m so pleased you saw the elephant!
Anne Sandler
Sarah, I loved all your monochrome cloud images. Yes, sunsets can be captured in black and white, imagination soars when clouds become animals, storms are so dramatic and mist and fog are beautiful. Your images captured them all.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Anne, I’m so glad you loved these 😊
Easymalc
A great collection as always Sarah. Cloud watching could become a cirr(i)us occupation if I let it.
Sarah Wilkie
Ouch Malcolm – awful (but clever) pun 😂😂 Thank you!
Easymalc
Yeh! Sorry about that 🙂
Heyjude
You are brave showing sunsets in B&W! I avoided those. I like all your stormy shots, especially the one with the rain coming down. Altogether another very nice gallery.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jude 😀 I know sunsets are probably best seen in colour but sometimes you get great dramatic clouds with them, especially in Africa and other tropical regions, so it seemed only right to let the colour take a backseat and celebrate the clouds!

These are wonderful Sarah. I see so much in your cloud photos. So many to like. The low cloud in the hills, I used to tell my girls that the mountains had captured the clouds. The ones with rain, the misty ones, the landscapes and the fluffies from above.
Thanks for joining in my Monochrome Madness Clouds 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Brian 😊 It was my pleasure to join in with such a great theme!

Clouds are fascinating and your photos are just too beautiful for words.
Sarah Wilkie
Aw, thank you so much 😊
Ritva Sillanmäki Photography
Lovely clouds, the coming storm was one of my fav’s it has so much mood in it. also the drooping clouds. Also the one over the mountains. I’ll leave picking shot here. Great gallery of shots Sarah
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Ritva 😊 It’s good to know you found several favourites here!
Leanne Cole
Wow Sarah you have so many photos of clouds, you could easily start your cloud folder. I do love the ones with the rain coming down, I love to get photos like that.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Leanne 😊 Your own cloud photos are excellent, so I’m chuffed you like mine!
harrienijland
A nice variety. Fine set in B&W.

Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Mel, I’m glad you enjoyed my clouds 🙂

I can’t see an elephant, but I can see a buffalo! What a rich variety of weather conditions you’ve offered here, and all made dramatic in monochrome. My favourites are your aircraft shot, and the one above it, in Montenegro.
Sarah Wilkie
Oh yes, I can see the buffalo now too, but I still feel the elephant is more obvious 😀 Funny (and interesting) how we all see things differently! That day in Montenegro had been so wet and miserable, I was glad to get that half-decent view towards the end of it 🙂
