Orange is red brought nearer to humanity by yellow
Wassily Kandinsky
Orange is an attention-grabbing colour, shouting ‘look at me’! You can’t easily ignore an orange. It suggests optimism, vitality, happiness, warmth. For many it is a spiritual colour, worn for instance by the Buddhist monks of Southeast Asia. But it can be aggressive and harsh at times, and overpowering if used in large amounts.
We use the colour to draw attention to ourselves or to objects. Think of traffic cones, safety equipment, hi-vis clothing or the amber traffic light that warns us to be ready to stop.
Orange is also the colour of autumn of course, so a perfect choice by Terri for this month’s Sunday Stills colour challenge. And of course with September being Becky’s month of squares, with the theme of seven, I had to select just seven of my favourite orange images and square them. It’s forced me to be more selective than usual; a good thing, as I’ve featured orange a couple of times in the past. There was my Getting Warmer post earlier this year, and a previous Sunday Stills one focusing specifically on apricot shades.
So for this post I’ve tried to focus on some more recent orange finds, which means inevitably that you’ll recall seeing some of them before! However I hope the squaring, and the impact of seeing them all together, will provide sufficient difference for you to enjoy them again. And the last one was taken especially for this post.
The bonus un-squared orange in my feature photo is a sunset over the western part of Newcastle, seen from the apartment we rented there last month.

Love ther bright and cheery orange photos! My favorite was the religious painting in Oaxaca.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie 😀 That’s actually a stained glass window!

I didn’t realize that, Sarah! Hope you’re enjoying California now. We’ll get back there in late December to visit our son and his family in San Francisco.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, having a great trip thanks 😃

As soon as I saw the title and read the first few lines I was thinking “hair”. Gladly, you didn’t disappoint. Another solid gallery cleverly put together Sarah. Not sure I would ever wear an orange item of clothing despite having nothing against the colour. That said, I now realise that I actually have (!), as I once wore The Netherlands football top when they got to The World Cup Final in 2010.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Leighton 😀 Orange is a hard colour for most of us to wear but I guess Dutch football supporters aren’t worrying about that when they go to matches!
equinoxio21
Orange was also a popular colour in the late 60’s, early 70’s. I had an orange shirt… (Not sure I’d wear it any more… LOL)
Loved the tourist hair.
Sarah Wilkie
I had an orange and shocking pink striped shirt as a child in the 60s. I loved it then but I KNOW I wouldn’t wear it now 😄
equinoxio21
I didn’t go as far as a pink striped shirt, but I can see what you mean… I guess the best answer to that is this:

I’m on a plane with restricted WiFi so no access to YouTube, but I’ll check that out when I can

No hurry. Where to?

How nice. Say hello to the Golden Gate bridge for me…

Will do!

Love the woman in Split with the flaming hair!

Ah, the colour orange. Supposedly an impact colour (as you say) according to people who know about these things. For me, I will for ever associate the colour with Sainsbury’s, but that’s because of my work history 😃. It also makes me think of Dutch football shirts of course.
Sarah Wilkie
Ah yes, Sainsbury’s of course 🙂 I guess they wanted to stand out from the crowd when they chose orange.
By the way, are you still having the same problem of the page hanging at ‘submitting comment’? I get it here still and on your site, but no others. I’ve changed theme in case Ashe was at the bottom of the problem but it didn’t help. I’m in touch with a Happiness Engineer to try to resolve it, but no joy so far!
thehungrytravellers.blog
Yes I am, just your site and no others at all. Still hanging even when we got good strong wifi.
Sarah Wilkie
It’s very odd! No one else seems to be having this problem here apart from you and me – at least, no one else has mentioned it and my husband tested it earlier today and left a comment without it hanging, as did the Happiness Engineer. And I only have it here and on your site 😀
thehungrytravellers.blog
Yep, likewise. Everything else working fine both ways on all other sites, just the same two issues (slow opening and comments saying they haven’t sent when they have)
Amy
Wow! What a fabulous orange collection around the world🧡🧡
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy, so glad you liked them 😀
Alli Templeton
Wow, Sarah, you’ve put together a rich and varied representation of the colour here and as always, your shots are superb. You’ve achieved something special too, as I’m not a fan of orange at all, but in this collection you’ve managed to show me the colour in a new light. I particularly love the stained glass window. I think I may have mentioned before that I’ve never been able to photograph stained glass, so I’m always impressed by such shots, especially as you’ve balanced it so well with the stone carving detail around it. I’ve no idea how you’ve managed that, but it’s beautiful. 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alli 😊 I’m happy to have ‘converted’ you to orange! To photograph stained glass you need to zoom in close enough that the camera exposes for it, rather than the overall building. Otherwise it comes out too pale and insipid, if at all. Also, I confess I sometimes edit it a bit afterwards, straightening converging lines and darkening the surrounding stonework so it stands out more. However in the case of this window the stones were interesting too so I left them as they were.
Alli Templeton
Ah, that’s probably where I go wrong – not zoomed in enough, although I still wouldn’t be able to achieve as good a result as you do, edits or not. Great stuff, Sarah. 🙂
margaret21
Orange is so uplifting. And you’ve found some good’uns here. Even the rust is quite cheery!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 🙂 I’m partial to a bit of rust, in its place (by which I mean in a photo, not on anything I own!)
margaret21
Well, quite. Though I can put up with a few rusting garden tools if they’re characterful enough.
kzmcb
Wow, that hair.
Sarah Wilkie
Amazing, isn’t it?!
the eternal traveller
I never used to be a fan of orange but the older I get the more I like it.
Sarah Wilkie
It’s not a colour I could easily wear, but I love orange flowers, for instance 🙂
Monkey's Tale
Orange is always a standout, my favourite shoes are orange. I also remember the girl with the orange hair from your pictures and the ceiling in Oaxaca from ours. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Orange shoes sound fun Maggie 😀 Yes, she featured in another post (I think though a different shot of her) as did that window in Oaxaca’s cathedral and the art work from La Paz.
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
I do remember the young woman with the orange hair!
Sarah Wilkie
Once seen, never forgotten!
Terri Webster Schrandt
Fabulous gallery of exotic oranges, Sarah! Glad you could double-dip, too. The orange flowers are stunning, and gotta love the orange haired gal!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Terri 😊 It was fun finding oranges that could be squared. I loved that girl’s hair!
Sue
Oaxaca version of Bill and Ben and the stained glass are good!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Sue 🙂 Yes, Bill and Ben came to my mind immediately when I saw this – it used to be my favourite Watch with Mother!

Other than actual oranges, and orange flowers, when I see orange – especially clothing – I think of the Netherlands. When I see someone with an orange uniform at the Olympics it is often someone Dutch. I can’t wear orange or rust color – it just doesn’t look good on me the way it does on trees in the autumn. But when I saw the orange hair, I remembered being in Amsterdam on King’s Day. I couldn’t do orange hair and I didn’t think I had any orange clothing. Then I remembered that my pink coat had an orange lining. So I turned it inside out and wore that. Anyway thanks for the trip around the orange square.
Rosalie
Sarah Wilkie
Hi Rosalie 🙂 Yes, I know just what you mean about orange clothing. I’ve always been glad I’m not Dutch as (like you) it’s a colour that really doesn’t suit me!
BeckyB
you’ve travelled the world in orange – these are wonderful
Sarah Wilkie
That’s a nice way of seeing this post, thank you Becky 🙂
