Obsessed by a fairy tale, we spend our lives searching for a magic door and a lost kingdom of peace
Eugene O’Neill
Whether ancient and beautiful, old and battered, or newer and colourful, there was something about the doors in Nepal that charmed me. And yes, some could have come straight out of a fairy tale perhaps.
I havenβt previously joined Debbieβs One Word Sunday challenge but this is a theme I couldnβt resist, especially as I had a folder of these captivating doors ready and waiting to share. Most I think are new for this post although a couple may have sneaked into some previous ones.
I visited Nepal in October and November 2022

Amazing details of most of the doors. Love this collection.
Sarah Wilkie
I know you love a nice door! Glad these appealed π

Love the color and detail in the doors. Nepal continues to amaze me, through your lens. I do love the older wood doors. They have so much character.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, I loved them too – you could study the details for ages and still find new things! Glad you’re enjoying seeing Nepal π
Wind Kisses
Yes.. I loved the journey you have been sharing with us.
Sarah Wilkie
Another one starting next week!
Wind Kisses
Lol Iβm not done with Nepal yet. Where to?
Sarah Wilkie
Colombia – but I’m sure Nepal will still pop up from time to time!
Ju-Lyn
An incredible selection of doors – if these are indicative, Nepal truly is a magical place!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jo-Lyn π They are completely indicative and very typical of the country, both the ornately carved and the simply painted!
Monkey's Tale
Great doors, there are fascinating ones in Nepal. I love the gecko (?) door handles π Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
I took those to be lizards, but from the feet I guess they could be geckos, yes – although they seem a bit too scaly perhaps?
Monkey's Tale
Ha maybe I wouldn’t want to actually grab them, but they’re quirky to look at π
Sarah Wilkie
Well I had to grab them every time I wanted something from the wardrobe π€£π€£
Monkey's Tale
OH, they were in your room!! I thought they were outside doors!! Hahaha
Sarah Wilkie
If you hover over the photos in most of my galleries you should see a caption explaining the image.
the eternal traveller
Were you tempted to open any doors and peek inside?
Sarah Wilkie
Haha, no – that wouldn’t have been possible really π The closed shop ones were all locked and the rest were private houses. But we saw inside plenty of open doors of course!
grandmisadventures
what a beautiful collection of doors! π
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, so glad you liked them π

Ooh, there are some goodies here, Sarah! Wonderful carvings.
By coincidence your post and Ali’s were together in my Reader and I discovered it was her first blogger meet up too. π€π
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jo π Yes, the first meet up for both of us (although as I said, I’m very used to VT ones which are similar!)
Heyjude
Such a wonderful gallery Sarah, you have found some real beauties and I love the lizard handles!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jude π The lizards seem to be general favourites!
Heyjude
Well they are rather cute.
Marie
The carvings are beautiful – And I love the lizards!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Marie – the lizards are fun, aren’t they?!
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
Fabulous collection. My favourite image is the header – that greeny-blue is such a wonderful colour.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anabel π That was one of my favourites too (I usually choose a favourite to feature!)
Amy
Wonderful door gallery of Nepal, Sarah! These door carvings are unique.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy – I loved the wood carving on the buildings there (not just doors but window frames and shutters too!)
Aletta - nowathome
A great collection of doors Sarah!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Aletta π
Mike and Kellye Hefner
This is a lovely collection of doors, Sarah! Each one is so unique and colorful. I wish we had more like these here in Texas.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Kellye π I think these are ‘of their place’ and wouldn’t fit so well in Texas – or in London, come to that!
I. J. Khanewala
Interesting indeed. Also interesting is the choice of opening with the closed doors of a pharmacy
Sarah Wilkie
I didn’t realise it was a pharmacy, not speaking the language – I simply liked the colours!
Sue
What wonderful, colourful doors, Sarah! The carvings on some are exquisite.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank Sue π Yes, it’s fabulous work and repays close study!
margaret21
These are fabulous. I hope they don’t get weathered out of existence any time soon.
Sarah Wilkie
I hope not Margaret, especially those amazing carvings!
margaret21
Quite!

So many wows in here Sarah. Worldwide influences as well as Nepalese culture π
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Brian, I’m glad you liked seeing them π
Rose
So many interesting doors. They make me curious to know whatβs behind each one. Do the interiors match the doors?
Sarah Wilkie
Good question Rose, but I’m unsure of the answer apart from the Royal Palace in Patan where yes, the interior was wonderful! I’ll do a full post on that one day soon π
rkrontheroad
So many wonderful doors. The ones that appeal to me most are the ones that show aging.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Ruth, and I’m with you on that although I also loved all the detail in the carving on some π
rkrontheroad
Yes, I agree. The one with the faces in Thamel is quite different and lovely.
Debbie
So glad you’ve joined, Sarah. What an amazing collection of doors you have given us.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Debbie, this was a great ‘one word’ to start me off π

Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Cee, glad you liked them π

It took a couple of moments, and a second look at the photo, before I realized that those lizards on your wardrobe in Pokhara must have served as the door handles.
Sarah Wilkie
Ah yes Don, they were indeed handles! A fun touch π
Annie Berger
Seeing so many doors different from those at home is always a thrill when we travel. Thanks for sharing some of your favorites from Nepal.
