Almost every person, from childhood, has been touched by the untamed beauty of wildflowers.
Lady Bird Johnson
I can remember a time when wildflowers were always just that, wild. They grew randomly in places where they had self-seeded, in hedgerows or on verges. In towns they were too often seen as weeds, not part of the gardener’s plans. If we were lucky they might pop up in odd corners of our urban concrete jungles, softening them and giving us a lift whenever we spotted them.
In recent years however there has been a welcome trend to actually plant wildflowers in our cities. Scattering their seeds in parks where grass has been left to grow tall, encouraging insects such as bees to visit and pollinate. And what a delight they are! They transport we town and city-dwellers to the countryside, renewing our spirits.
For that reason, and because their annual return reminds us of the power of renewal more generally, I’m sharing some photos from a recent visit to Kensington Gardens with Becky for her May ‘squares’ theme. Some are fairly straight-forward shots whereas others I’ve edited to give a more impressionistic feel using Nik Color Efex Pro (mainly ‘sunlight’ and ‘vignette blur’ filters).
In joy or sadness, flowers are our constant friends.

I visit Kensington Gardens regularly; these photos were all taken on my latest visit in May 2024

Wow, thank you so much 😊

I’m such a big fan of wildflowers! At our West Coast home, they bloom naturally during August and September (our spring) – the most beautiful sight! You have lovely photos Sarah – it feels as if I can touch them through my computer screen (and at the same time have a nice sneeze from all the pollen)!

Thanks so much, I’m pleased you enjoyed these flowers from our spring 😀

Wildflowers bring such joy to my soul-the colors and their determination to bloom wherever they are. Beautiful pictures 🙂

Thank you Meg, I’m always happy to spread some joy!

I like how you moved from wide to close up in these photos!!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nora 🙂 I’m pleased you picked up on that arrangement!
Heyjude
I think that’s one reason why I love living where I do. The lanes are full of wild flowers. Currently Red Campion and Cow Parsley, soon it will be Foxgloves.

You can’t beat an English country lane in spring and summer 😀

These are beautiful photos, Sarah. It’s a wonderful trend to plant wildflowers.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😀 Yes, I think it’s a great trend!

Very nice. I like your choice of arrangement in the gallery. I wouldn’t have guessed that wildflowers were growing by design. I love the idea.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Sandy 🙂 There’s little design involved – they just scatter the seeds!

I love this trend too, and your pictures are fabulous as usual.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Anabel 😊

How lucky you are to be able to go whenever you want.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes indeed – this is probably the nearest to us of all the Royal Parks in London, only about 30 minutes (Tube and walk) 😀

Very special

Beautiful, Sarah! These flow images are like an impressionism painting. Love these.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Amy, I was sort-of aiming for an impressionistic look 😀

This is the best time of year for wild flowers in our part of the world. I always loved the huge numbers of wild rhododendrons when I lived in Sussex. May is lovely for that reason alone.

I have no idea why your comment went into my ‘to be approved’ folder Phil, when you’re such a regular visitor and commentator here! The vagaries of WP … Anyway, great as always to hear from you and I’m glad you enjoyed this glimpse of an English spring from afar 🙂

That’s happened with a couple of our regulars recently too. And once it’s started, it stays there, every one needs approval and I don’t know how to change it!
Sarah Wilkie
I have one regular like that, Maggie from Monkey’s Tale – every single time she comments I have to approve it, which is crazy!

Yep, she’s the same on mine…

Beautiful Sarah!

Thank you Anne 🙂

That’s how the prairies of the Midwest used to look. Very nice, thanks for sharing.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Brad – it’s lovely to think that they have made this corner of a London park look like a prairie!
