At this time of year night is longer than day here in the northern hemisphere. But days are now perceptibly lengthening. Does more daylight mean more opportunities for photography? Perhaps, but the night can be a rewarding time too, of course.

Sooner or later it seems, all paths in Marrakesh lead to the Jemaa el-Fnaa. The name (sometimes spelled Djemaa el Fna or Jamaa el Fna) means βAssembly of the Deadβ in Arabic; but a visit here suggests life in all its vibrancy. To call this the cityβs main square doesnβt begin to do justice to it. This is a meeting place, a shopping centre, a performance space, a happening. It is surrounded by restaurants and cafΓ©s, each with a roof terrace to offer a ringside seat from where to observe all the action, but better by far to get immersed…

I have always been fascinated by the moon. Perhaps itβs because I grew up in the 1960s, during the space race era. I remember vividly being woken by my father to watch Neil Armstrongβs famous βfirst stepβ; and the wonder I felt at being able to see these grainy images beamed into our living room from the silver disc I saw in the night sky.

Is there a traveller or photographer anywhere who doesnβt dream of one day seeing the Aurora? It may be a scientific phenomenon, but the artistry of those beautiful glowing colours that seem to appear almost mysteriously in the sky canβt fail to induce awe in anyone who sees them.
